Queen Charlotte Track

It was nice to have a trek that could be biked. I was a bit nervous as I am an intermediate skilled rider, and the term "advanced" was used everywhere for rating the difficulty. Using the coloring system I'm used to, I would say this...MoreThank you for your lovely review and recommendations, it is great to hear you enjoyed your time biking the track. :)

Queen Charlotte Sound

Reviewed By Oldjack - Greater Melbourne, Australia

Pick a nice sunny day and the scenery is as good as gets. There are various ways to see the Sound and of course a cruise is best but you get some great views and a feel for the place from Karaka Point and Waikawa Bay, a short drive from Picton.

Edwin Fox Maritime Museum

The Edwin Fox is a great example of NZ Maritime History, 161 years old this year and currently listed as the 9th oldest ship in the world, the oldest surviving merchant ship, last surviving convict ship that took convicts to Australia and last wooden NZ immigrant ship and was also used to transport troops to the Crimean war.Come step aboard, go into the hull of the ship and visit the dry dock to get a real feel of the size of the ship and indeed what voyages would of been like!Open everyday group bookings and guided tours by arrangement.

This ship has so much history - going all the way back to 1853 when it was built in India. It has served as transport for troops, immigrants, and even criminals. There are actual beds still inside. It is the world's 9th oldest ship! There is a short video and many displays describing the ship and it's history. There is also a small gift shop inside. We were able to get tickets online through Book me at a discount. We were able to tour the whole ship in less than a hour.

Fabulous instructions from Wilderness guides. Beautiful scenery lovely places to go for half a day including isolated Beaches . Easy to steer kayaks with rudder! Easy to keep out of the way of the Ferries that use a stretch of the water - it’s a great test of stamina to negotiate the ferry and its waves

Lochmara Lodge Marlborough Sounds Wildlife Recovery Centre

This unique centre provides an opportunity for nature-lovers to interact with, learn about and appreciate the unique flora and fauna of the Marlborough Sounds. The centre includes wild bird recovery, endangered bird and gecko breeding enclosures, and a self guided ecotour among native bush. Day/half-day trips include a boat cruise from Picton (Lochmara can easily arrange boat transport for you) on the stunning Queen Charlotte Sound, and an optional walk on the Queen Charlotte Track.

This review is for outdoor activities, and not for accommodation/restaurant. The area is small and very "touristy". Most of typical NZ attractions (feeding eels, glow worms, etc.) are possibly better represented elsewhere, but at Lochmara everything is close together and can be done in one day. The glass boat was enjoyable for all of us, adults and children. The views are stunning, and resting in a hummock watching the sea is always an option. For kayaking you really need to come very early (or late) in the day, otherwise there will be no kayaks.
