March 6, 2018 Jasper Kershner

Zwiesel is a town located in the lower-Bavarian district of Regen, and since 1972 is a state-approved health resort with particularly good air. The name of the town was derived from the Bavarian word stem "zwisl" which refers to the form of a fork. We love shopping for glassware and beautiful crystal. Outlet prices are a good value and glass blowers are behind a large glass window to watch. There is a bakery/cafe and also a restaurant available if you are hungry.

The outside area round the museum is in fact a lovely park with a lake and many interesting glass exhibits which sparkle in the daylight and are well reflected in the lake water. There is also an adventure climbing park both for adults and children and a picnic area. There is no fee for the park. The glass museum (a small entry fee) inside is not very large, but arranged into circular walks on two levels through which visitors can meander to learn about the glass making in the region, its history but also to see many examples of glassware and glass art. There is also a café with a pleasant outside sitting area. There is plenty of free parking available on site.

Nationalparkzentrum Falkenstein

A National Park that principally has 4 animals within: Lynx, Wolves, Auroch and wild horses. Entrance is free (although parking is charged before 6pm (afterwards its free). If you have a disability problem you might find it difficult to walk to the enclosures as the ascent is steep in places. As keen photographers we concentrated on the wolves and the lynx. Make sure you get there early (fed early morning) for the wolves who move as a pack and are ideally photographed / watched from the covered walkway. The two lynx will need some time to wait for them as they are very elusive and secretive. Great modern restaurant with all staff being very helpful.

We took the Cable car up and down and did the Rundwanderweg around the summit. There is a reduced fare for families and we paid €31 for a family of 4 (one under 6).
The path is predictably busy with day trippers but offers plenty of opportunity for a little rock climbing and picking of blueberries, raspberries and cranberries - all without going off piste which is strongly discouraged. We had a picknick 'on the rocks' and a beer and wine spritzer after our walk in the hut with a little playground. All in all a great day out.

The whole facility is very nice, the Gardens and specially the restaurant have an amazing ambient. It is however not at all comparable to the Weinfurtner Glasdorf in Arnbruck. They have some nice items but not neither the diversity nor the prices are as attractive as Weinfurtner. It is however worth a visit if you are in the vicinity.

(Always a bonus in my book!)
We followed the brown signs to actually find the place. Once parked, its about 1.5 km hike to the ruins. Path is like a dirt/gravel driveway. Easy to hike. Pet, bike, & stroller friendly. Path is mostly shaded so even on a hot day it wasn't too bad.
Once at the ruins, the views from the top are rather nice. There are several stairs on/in the ruins. On a clear day one can even see the Czech Republic!

Situated on a bend on the road toward the sky area on Arber, a Bavarian mountain not far from Bodenmais. Authentic Bavaria and highly popular. Very busy in the summer at the week-ends. Hot and cold menu and local beer. You can rent peddle boats and go around the cold water lake.
