We'd seen a sign to "Craft Village", wondered what that was all about & detoured into West Kilbride. While wandering about there we dropped into the Barony Centre, which was pretty much empty, but a volunteer there told us about Portencross Castle nearby & gave us a brochure. We dropped down without any expectations.
What a nice surprise! The little 12th C castle is in a very picturesque location, with a tiny harbour and views to the Islands. We were impressed by the clarity of the water. The volunteers were happy to see us mid-week as we were the only ones there. I was interested to learn that the cannon lying in the grass outside was a genuine Armada cannon, salvaged from offshore. The castle is quite interesting with illustrations and some old photos showing how things might have been - it has been a ruin since the 1700's but since Cromwell left it alone it was probably derelict before then. The volunteers were extremely helpful and enthusiastic and answered all our questions. We were shown where the unexcavated bottle dungeon is (behind a door that is usually propped open). After looking around inside we wandered along the shore a bit, taking some photos of the small working harbour a few hundred metres along the coast.
Free parking & free entry. A hidden gem & very uncommercial. We left a donation - it was worth it.

Saltcoats beach, even in autumn, is always immaculate....well done Council for keeping it so clean. It is a great resource and even in the worst of Scottish weathers there are still people on the beach.......walking dogs, gathering seaweed(?....probably for Gardens?), kayaking , windsurfing etc.....a jewel in the 3 Toons crown.

The castle was booked for a special birthday party and couldn't have been better. The historic surroundings were ideal, the roaring fire very welcome and the service and birthday fare excellent. The dining room was perfect for the 50 guests invited and the separate function room ideal for the birthday festivities.

Went here for a tea and scone while waiting for an appointment near bye. Very bright and airy cafe which is very pleasant. The scone was tasty but a bit on the small side and the tea which came in a glass pot was delicious. The staff were polite and friendly and although busy the food came reasonably quickly. I would visit again

I have visited this course twice over the past couple of months, whilst being on holiday.
It is £55 a round, but is excellent value for money.
The pro shop, and bar staff were very welcoming.
The course itself is awesome.
I tried to keep out of the rough, but sometime was a little unlucky lol.
The rough was a little harsher playing it the second time.
The fairways, tees and greens were all in excellent condition.
The views are spectacular as it sits rigt on the beach.

This is a lovely shop to visit for all sorts of gifts. There are bags, candles, jewellery, and lots of other things. They often have unusual and interesting gifts. I recently bought sea horses and puffins as part of a bathroom decor. In addition, the sales staff are always helpful and pleasant. You have plenty of time to browse without being hurried in any way. You can check them out on Facebook. Well worth a visit.
