A small zoo containing local animals combined with a number of large Olmec sculptures rescued from along the coast where the Olmecs used to live, all in a jungle setting. There is a winding path that takes you around the animals and covered bird aviary and a second path with little red coloured right hand foot prints (why no left hand footprints?) every so often, that guides you around the artefacts. The items are mainly massive stone heads with quite well defined features and there are descriptions in English by each item. This is, so I am told, the only bit of jungle in Villahermosa and it is set right by the river’s edge. Will take about an hour or so to do both.

We paid 150 pesos for a taxi from Villahermosa to Yumka, where we paid 100 pesos per person for the entrance. You can take a colectivo back for only 15 or 20 pesos.
First the great stuff:
- Staff was very friendly (but didn't speak English).
- Elefants, rhinos, zebras, giraffes, gazelles, buffaloes, ostriches etc. had a BIG area and walked around amongst each other like they would do in Africa - I definitely liked this part and the animals looked happy. The monkeys had their own little 'island' but without fences.
- The train/tram took us through this area and allowed great photo opportunities as we got close to many of the animals.
- The place where you get off the train has a big playground for kids, cages with snakes and a house of birds, where you can walk next to flamingoes, tucans and other exotic birds.
And now, the not so great stuff:
- We didn't see any manatees or crocodiles in the first area of the zoo. There weren't any hippos either.
- All the cats (pumas, tiger and jaguar) are kept in very small cages.
- We waited almost an hour for the train/tram to pick us up (staff said 20 minutes) and drive us through the savanna-part. We got off at a platform with snakes, birds and a playground and even though it was fun, we waited quite a while on the train before we could head back to the exit.
- Everything was in Spanish, no English options or written translations.
- There are a lot of mosquitos. I mean A LOT. Like, literally thousands of mosquitos on you all the time. Especially on the walking tour. Bring repellent!
Although this may seem like a bad review, we actually had a great day and enjoyed it a lot. Most of the time it felt more like a safari than a zoo and I would recommend this to families with kids, animal lovers or if you have some time to kill in Villahermosa.

There are literally hundreds of Olmec and Mayan artifacts carefully displayed on a number of levels. This is a modern museum, well laid out with not many visitors. We were staying with a local family so the guide who latched onto us was very pleased to see us and with the benefit of our friend translating were able to understand much about the place. The star exhibit is the original Mayan calendar predicting the end of the world recently. Actually there is much more to see and the items on the top floor were similar to other cultures around the world.
If you don't do culture there was good views of the river and Cathedral and it's air conditioned!!

I had the opportunity to visit this beautiful Museum in downtown Villahermosa. Our tour guy (I don't recall his name) was a very nice, educated, and lively man. The Museum is conveniently located in one of the principal corners of the downtown just two blocks away form the Government offices and the principal plaza.
The museum is full of art from different eras of the region. From the conquest all the way to the Mexican revolution.

We were simply walking around the town, between the Cathedral and the town center and we happened upon the park. There are some vendors around, and it was around noon - so we spent an hour in the shade watching people, birds and the water........and a few gators!

Very interesting museum, you even get a free guided tour! Interesting enough, Carlos Pellicer never married his fiancé, presumably just too busy to form a family...

This Cathedral is rather interesting. It is built more for function, than for style. Follow around the right exterior, and you will find another building holding a tribute to the visit by Pope John-Paul II, including the chair & puppet made especially for the occasion, and the vestments that he wore (unfortunately, those photos did not turn out.......)

Suelen ir a recrearse los niños familias y ciudadanos chocos a este parque tan bello, muy bien cuidado y con amplias zonas de juegos para recrearse o hacer ejercicio en la que fuera otrora recinto ferial .

And maybe it won't, it's a crapshoot! For this reason, it is not the main attraction in the Parque Tomas Garrido Canabal (that would be the Parque Museo La Venta, right next to the mirador) and you shouldn't go there with the sole intention of getting a look across Villahermosa from the top, though the view is very nice. It's free to go up.
