Flipje & Streekmuseum

If you see the other reviews, you will understand my point. This museum if a tiny jewel in the heart of Holland for car traveling tourists, or should I say “Dutch speaking visitors”. I believe it is meant to convey a view of the local history, through the story of a local jam factory, but all the signs are exclusively written in Dutch! The exhibits are very nice, maybe some need to be updated in style, but the problem is there is no translation whatsoever of any of the signs. If the Museum wants to attract more visitors per year, it should translate them. If they do not have a budget for this project, they could make a booklet in different languages (at least in the main European languages) which visitors could take with them along their visit and return on their way out. A second piece of advice: improve the gift shop and take things out of the glass cabinets! You are missing sales! Finally: get rid of the cavities exhibit! It doesn’t make much sense and it is not appealing to any eye. A special note about the young man who walks you in the Museum and introduces you to the exhibits. He took the challenge to make his full introduction in English and did an excellent job! I was very grateful! I think he needs to be promoted! :)

We had fun and the park is varied, but someone of our groupe had an accident that could have been avoided with better safety measures. Also no effective support and we had to find the hospital by our own means. Unacceptable.
Moreover, they sell alcohol on all the boots near the attractions, from 9 o'clock onwards. very dangerous.

Historisch Museum der Koninklijke Marechaussee

Reviewed By Egbert M - The Hague, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands

For a six year old boy everything to do with soldiers and police is exciting. Unfortunately the Army museum in Delft closed down (to reopen in 2015 in Soesterberg), so the choice fell on the Marechaussée museum in the old city of Buren (Gelderland province).
The museum is housed in the former orphanage of the very nice small city of Buren. The orphanage was set up by Anna van Buren, one of the spouses of William of Orange. Since a few decades it houses the Museum of the Marechaussée (Royal Military Police of the Netherlands). The museum shows a nice collection of old uniforms, weapons and vehicles used by the Marechaussée and explains the function of it. Besides protection of the borders and protection of the Royal family and other dignitaries, much less is known that the Marechaussée is involved is involved in 'real' police work, as forensic investigation, assisting the police with SWAT teams and training of police in foreign countries, under the umbrella of the UN.
My son was excited about the museum, which has a nice puzzle tour for kids (I only saw a dutch version of it). For me it was also nice as the collection of uniforms was very extensive and very well preserved. At the moment they making a new set up of the museum, to make it more interactive. I hope this makes the exhibition more lively and attractive.
As the museum is located in a building from the end of the 17th century, it is a little bit difficult for wheelchairs to navigate because of the narrow corridors.
As there is no space in the main building for large vehicles, these are exhibited in a site building some 100 m from the main building.

Interestingly thee Stable house is more well maintained (because they run is as a cafe now), than the interior of the main castle building. You castle entrance free is including the guided tour in Dutch, but they have some English subtitle video for you to watch and leaflet to read as you walk about the rooms they lead you to see. A lot of the original furniture were still there but quite torn looking, definitely the seat fabric were torn. Looking a little run down and sad. The castle ground looks well maintained, the orangerie is bookable for wedding parties. There are kitchen garden, green house, etc..

We visited Kasteel Duurstede today. While the park around and the castle itself look great, we realized the management rents this place for weddings and other organizations, so not only it was impossible to check the place from inside one guy approached us and let us know we should leave because of the wedding. Moreover, when there is such an organization they put some tables and parasols at the castle grounds and they do not fit with the character at all. In my opinion those type of cultural heritages should not be a toy for 21th century entertainment....What a shame...

We werden in 2 groepjes verdeeld.
