My God what a hidden treasure off the beaten track of China. We arrived into Tianshui by slow sleeper train from Xian. Quite a large city considering its remote and in the middle of nowhere. There was hardly any pollution here compared to Henan Province. We were by far the only two westerners in town the entire time and quite an attraction to the rest of the locals. We took a taxi from out hotel in Tianshui and we hired the driver for the entire day. From the very main entrance where you purchase the tickets do not walk whatever you do just take the electric bus as its a very far walk to the base of the mountain and uphill in the heat of the 40C summer we were visiting. Once you get to the base of the mountain there are lots of lovely chinese locals selling some great food and drinks to try. After all when in China be brave and eat some of the stuff the locals prepare in the streets. Lots of great souvenirs along the trail to the top of the mountain specially the one and only lady that hands paint the bamboo fans herself. Then finally the magic and beauty of the Maaji mountain temple, lots of stairs to climb up and down and breath taking views surrounding you. An incredible and magical place specially on a nice sunny blue skies day as the day we visited in August.

Another temple,yawn.. There was also a museum with the usual old vases etc. What made the visit worthwhile was seeing the local population interacting with each other outside the temple grounds. Men and women were playing games and gambling, while others gathered to play music with standers by joining in to sing. It was wonderful to watch the locals enjoying the afternoon. There was also a wood carver in a shop making the greatest sculptures from driftwood.

We visited this family garden which was fantastic. No entrance fees and the underground store is a must see spot. This was the place where they stored their treasures and food. They could also escaped to the other building on the other side of the road.

This is a very Taoist experience. Do not expect wondrous, lavishness carved and prfewseerved monuments. My sense of the experience was one to appreciate the grandeur an tranquility of the surroundings and long hike.

Tianshui has other attractions besides Maijishan grottoes! 87 km from the Tianshui Railway Station is the Elephant Mountain where one can enjoy the greenery as well as the clay statue of Sakyamuni carved onto the mountain more than 300 years and four dynasties. The blue moustache was added by a merchant who had promised to return if he succeeded in his business. Of unique significance are the hole niches on the cliff, a chancel and the Buddhist niche for the monks to practice Buddhism.

This is not just a single temple but a stunningly beautiful mountainside with walks through wooded areas and alongside lakes with many shrines and photogenic buildings and Bridges. The nearby village seems to exist purely on the sale of incense which is burnt in vast quantities outside the temple. A small monk walks around chanting while carrying a large stone above his head. He's quite happy to let visitors try to lift it, it's heavy! Lots to see and there is a small area of street food carts if hunger sets in. This attraction is some distance from Yichang but well worth a visit.
