Tangshan (Chinese: 唐山; pinyin: Tángshān) is a largely industrial prefecture-level city in northeastern Hebei province, China. It has become known for the 1976 Tangshan earthquake which measured 7.8 on the Richter scale, flattening much of the city and killing at least 255,000 residents according to official estimates. The city has since been rebuilt, has become a tourist attraction and has among the 10 largest ports in China.

Like everything in this city the Earthquake Memorial Hall is dusty. But its interessting to see the devastation of the city and the phenomenal rebuild.
Since 2012 there is a Wanda Place Shopping mall right around the corner, with a nice Starbucks and some good shops.
In the evening there are a lot of young couples around the memorial, older people gather to dance and you can play carnival like games in the "park" area.

This actually a guite good museum in Tangshan, detailing the the 1976 earthquake. Clean, well organized and was very pleasent inside considering 30c today. Gave good details of the destruction and rebuilding, some English translations. Surrounding park is nice as well, good to fly a kite. And unlike many attractions in China, this museum is FREE.

This is a major receration and ecologicalparkland in Tangshan. It is one of the largest artifical lakes in Asia, formed in part by flooded coalmines.
It is well worth a visit if you like peaceful walks and plants. Many local people go there and are friendly to foreigners. It is too big to walk around, so exploring small parts on foot, or using bicycles may be options.
South Lake Park is actually several lakes, and a main road seperating the main parts. There is a hill in the south of the northern part, worth a climb for the view.

The Phoenix Mountain Park is nestled by the large South Lake, like a couple holding hand-in-hand showing their beauty and charisma. It does tell how the city recovered from the devastating disaster.
However, the Mountain itself doesn't quite live up to its name; it looked just like a huge mound to me. Though the park might be inspirational to its visitors, obviously it needs much upgrading in the new millennium to instill renewed strengths to the people of the city.

The home goods place was nice. Not terrible at all. A pretty lady talked to us about Haier refrigerators and gave us water and snacks.
Went up to the kids floor, the kid wanted to play with some toys. Turns out if we bought a toy, we could play with the Hot Wheels tracks on display for free. Bought a few cars and found out the tracks were broken.
Went to look at computers and tried to buy one. A customer nearby said not to buy a PC there, since he bought a "new" PC the day before and found out it was previously used. Asked the store person about that, and he emphatically denied using old parts, old stuff, old anything. All good. We tried to buy a PC, but there weren't any but the display model, which was wrapped in plastic. He assured us it was good, we asked him to turn it on, and it did nothing at all until we gave up on this store and left.
