A stop in Rissani wasn't on our itinerary but our guide thought we'd enjoy it and we did - a lot! Market days are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. It's worth planning your trip around this. What makes it different from the many others we'd visited, was the fact that villagers come from miles around to sell their wares. Most arrive via donkey and there is a large donkey parking lot at one end of the market. The donkeys themselves, carts, saddle bags and related equipment are all sitting by the fence without anyone watching over them for theft. Our guide said that several months ago someone tried to steal something and was beaten by a crowd! The market offers everything imagineable with more spice and natural healing stalls than usual. Spices were weighed on an ancient counter-balance scale. We were offered many homeopathic cures to smell, rub on, or taste. There were few tourists so we got to see how the locals shop and bargain.
This area is more conservative and we saw many women completely covered burka style. The majority of men wore the jeballa although teens were still in jeans. I'd highly recommend a stop to do a reality check.

Sijilmassa (pronounced see-jill-moss-uh), a national historic site recognized by Morocco's Ministry of Culture, was the fabled and ancient Berber capital of the Tafilalet Kingdom located at the northern edge of the Sahara desert that once rivaled Marrakech. Founded in A.D. 757 On the banks overlooking the Oued Ziz, a river in the oasis region of the Sahara desert, Sijilmassa grew wealthy and powerful during the Middle Ages as a gold-trade-route city strategically located at the exit-point of the western Trans-Saharan caravan trade route -- which extended from the Niger River in the Sudan to Tangier in northern Morocco.
Although small this was the most beautiful courtyard of nature i came across in Morocco, lush green with a variety of tree planted, i think 5 different ones. Being a Non Muslim we were not allowed into the Mausoleum or the Mosque. A visit can be wrapped up under 5 to 10 minutes but this place calls ones to sit down and relax, unfortunately with a schedule to keep, more sites to visit, that was not possible.

After the souks of Marrakech and Fes the covered souk of Rissani is small - but for real atmosphere of the sheep and goat and cattle market -with all the bargains solely made by local herders, this little market area, walled- in from the main dusty road through the town is a sight not to be missed. Try not to scratch your nose or you might find you've bought a couple of kids (or sold your OWN human ones!!!)

My intention and wish is to give everyone an insight into the daily Morrocan life, to show our fascinating mixture. of cultures, the classical old Arabic, the traditional nomads, the freedom – loving Tuareq, and the oldest Moroccan inhabitants, the Berber, creating the unique feeling of my country. It would be my pleasure to help you to get a deep immersion in the traditional life

Understanding the fossils, how they formed, how they were found, how they are made into everything from cheese trays to magnificent tables and Fountains kept us mesmerized for several hours. After learning all this, we simply had to buy some items. They are now our favorite souvenirs of Morocco.

Sahara Gallery Rissani is an antique store specialized in old objects of the Tafilalet Region and the southern part of Morocco. The store contains thousands of old objects and a variety of Berber Touareg jewelry, fossils and minerals ...
Our small group was introduced to Ibrahim Ait Rhanimi, proprietor of Sahara Gallery Rissani by our guide Mohamed of Around Morocco Tours. After visiting the Berber Museum at Jardin Magorelle, I was intrigued by the Berber broach. Ibrahim not only showed us this treasures, but also gave us background how the pieces were acquired and from which tribe. There was no pressure to purchase, which gave us an opportunity to explore his amazing collections, examine and inquire about the pieces.. Majority of our group bought antique Berber or Bedouin jewelry, which will recollect our amazing experience in Morocco. If you are in the South of Morocco looking for something special, I recommend a visit to Sahara Gallery Rissani, phone #00212 06 62 15 30 08.

Members of the same extended family have been living in this Kasbah style Berber village for over four hundred years. Our guide brought us into the village through the main gate and introduced us to several of the families who still live there. Some of the property has been lovingly restored thanks to the gifts from visitors eager to see the life style of these people. Yet, some of the village is much in need of repair and restoration.
We were shown into the living quarters of one family. We got to explore what must have been the home of a prosperous extended family at one time. These people live simply, yet, they seem content with their lives. I don't think the public can simply walk into this private space. Ask your local guide to bring you here. Enjoy.

We stopped here for lunch after visiting the souks in Rissani. This spot is a combination handi-crafts museum/warehouse and Touareg cultural center that is extremely interesting. Our host Ali seated us under a berber tent and served us mint tea while telling us about the ancient caravan routes south across the Sahara Desert, the area the Touareg are originally from. Bringing salt, ivory, slaves and gold north from Timbuktu, a camel caravan took 52 days to cross the Sahara and reach Rissani.
A very flavorful, delicious Madfouna (Berber stuffed pizza) was served for lunch. Years ago these were cooked in the sand, using the heat from the sun and sand to bake them. With our stomachs full, it was then time to shop. Maison Touareg has a vast collection of unique items that are crafted by families in very isolated villages, as a way to supplement their incomes. Forget the medina in Marrakech and its Chinese imports, this is the place to shop if you want something very authentic from Morocco.
We hadn’t intended to buy a carpet, but they were absolutely spectacular, with many varied styles, techniques and sizes to choose from. We benefitted from it being the slow off-season, but still you need to bargain and bargain hard as nothing has a price tag. And if you must, just say no politely and walk away. Of course they take credit cards and ship anywhere in the world. They also can fold carpets small enough to fit into a suitcase, which is the way we went.
Ali was one of the most knowledgeable, engaging conversationalists we spent time with in Morocco, and we enjoyed his company thoroughly. Buying a carpet there was one of the most memorable moments of our trip. "You bargain like a true son of a Berber," Ali told me. I’ll take that as a compliment.

You can find more interesting things to do in Rissani and Merzouga, as Ksar El Fida is not even a museum anymore, but there is an enthusiastic septogenarian guard who will tour you around the facility, which does have some interesting architectural details. Someday, this will be an interesting museum, but not yet...
