Kootenay National Park

Whatever you do, PLEASE don't just drive through the park as some have mentioned they've done, you won't get the true feel of this place!! There's a lot to see here. There are five different colors of water in the lakes and rivers I saw, which is very unusual. Some areas to see them are Olive Lake (be aware, but not too concerned there are grizzly bears that frequent this area) just outside of Radium Hot Springs, Verdant Creek (great trail for rugged backcountry hiking with magnificent views), where you'll see a sign for the hiking trail, not far from Paint Pots turnoff (you'll see three different colors of water there, but none of the five I'm talking about), magnificent Marble Canyon and a couple of areas where there are some unusual colors in the ponds as well. Sinclair Canyon with the Redwall Fault are unusual also, right on the outskirts of Radium Hot Springs. Here you can see bighorn sheep regularly and occasionally mountain goats. There are great areas for seeing fossils , where Parks Canada will conduct Burgess Shale themed hikes in the Stanley Glacier Valley, near the border of BC and Alberta (Continental Divide), for people that want to see them. There are some pretty large ones to see. Please don't take any, it's illegal. It's recommended to take the hike with a guide because he knows where the best ones are, whereas for tourists, it's a gamble to find them. The Radium Hot Springs is a worthwhile visit too, at least it will be when the construction is done (I was fortunate, it was fully open when I was there during Labor Day weekend). It only costs about $6.00CAD, if that much. It's a great idea to take one day to see all the scenic turnouts and take some nice little hikes. You'll be happy you took a route less travelled. I KNOW I was, especially after dealing with the zoo like atmosphere at Banff and Jasper National Parks.

Very impressed with this federally operated hot spring. The staff were very friendly and the facility was clean and well organized. Surprisingly the entry fee was very reasonable (considering the outrageous fee for an annual national park pass.) I seem to remember the water was a lot hotter last time I was there some 15 years ago

Valley Zipline Adventures

You'll be soaring in style on our 7 Zipline Canopy Tour geared up with our top quality equipment. The first 5 lines take you zig-zagging across the Dry Gultch Valley, followed by a shorter zip to get you in place for our last monster line. This is the longest and faster line of the tour, and it's a double zip! You get to race a friend to the finish.

An exhilarating trip zig-zagging across the valley, culminating in a race against someone else in your group on the longest line, that brings you to within a short walk of the starting point.
My only criticism is that in comparison with Go Ape sites in the UK it is a bit limited - they have lots of treetop obstacles to get around, including tarzan ropes, before reaching the zip line at the end of each stage. Here there were just the zip lines.
Two people accompany each group so there is someone to make sure you get on to the platform at the far end. If you don't quite make it (as my companion didn't on one occasion), you slide back along the zip line, and the group leader will come out to rescue you, pulling himself and you back in with a rope secured to the far end.
The karabiners they use ensure that you are always clipped on with at least one.

Spur Valley Golf Resort

We spent 10 or so years camping at the Resort and some of it being members of the golf course. We relocated our home base therefore had to give our little piece of heaven. The golf course will challenge anyone and everyone. It may only be 9 holes but you will want to go around again and I promise you will not be bored. The golf course is always in pristine condition ( usually way ahead of the other " Valley" courses) every spring and stays this way all summer. You will be warmly welcomed by the golf course staff and the Cantina staff. If you go, stay for a meal, you won't regret it. We have not been able to find a replacement in our new location, therefore still must return yearly for our " Spur Valley Fix".

If you enjoy “quirky” you will love this place. The proprietor is a true maverick and a reminder of “It takes all kinds to make the world go round”. We loved visiting with him and learning his background. A very independent free spirt that seems to enjoy every minute of life. Our faces hurt from smiling by the time we left. This could very well be the only place on earth where pet goats are fed potato chips.

One of the best visitor centers we've been in. Lots of well-organized information and a very knowledgeable staff. We were looking for a campground in the area and a young man named Travis found one for us. He was young, but a real professional. Radium Hot Springs is more than hot pools... it's a cute little touristy town, filled with restaurants and shops. Loved it!

There is a ton of information to gathered here. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. There is an entire area dedicated to the first peoples of the region including their fascinating origin story. It is really warm in here so we would recommend going earlier in the day. There is a TON of information about the whole region and the staff is very knowledgeable. Definitely worth the stop.
