Genoveva Castle (Genovevaburg)

Reviewed By Eyekaytoo - Leverkusen, Germany

We travelled over to Mayen during the Easter break from our base in Adenau. We parked for free within a stone's throw of the Genoveva castle and walked past the old fashioned English telephone box to the entrance to the museum. Inside the young receptionist explained that we had the option to visit three attractions with a multi ticket. On her recommendation we decided to restrict ourselves to the descent to the disused slate mine under the castle.
We took the lift down with one of the guides who proceeded to help us get kitted out with essential miners helmets and optional waterproof jacket to ward off the chill and the dripping roof of the mine. He then partially guided us around the underground tunnels which were well lit and signposted in the German language. At some point we seemed to lose him but that was OK. The quaint train hooked up to a video show of the mine was a nice touch - excellent for the kids.
Apparently the mines were used during the Second World War as bunkers to protect the local population from the air raids above - at least 80% of the town was apparently destroyed in the war.
We enjoyed our short, but informative time here. My aged parents were able to get around perfectly well and we were all grateful for the clean, free toilets on site. And for the princely sum of 13,00 Euro as the entrance fee for all three of us, who can complain?

Relative expensive and quite long if you want to do (or see) everything. In my opinion a bit too much of the good thing.

Maria Laach Abbey

Beautiful building in a serene setting - was lucky enough to catch the 1145am service so a little chanting as well. There is a table in the back of the church with self guided tour cards in many languages. Well worth a couple of hours or a whole day. Bring your camera.

Benediktinerabtei Maria Laach

Reviewed By Solodam J - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The location is in the green area and also not so far from the "Laacher See" ( Lake Laach). The name of this abbey was used to be "Lake Abbey" until the Jesuits added "Maria" in 1862. The architecture style gives the characteristic of this catholic church. It was quite dark inside the church.

Burg Eltz

Reviewed By DiegoMMA

We went on a Saturday but unfortunately Burg Eltz was closed due to winter season. Nevertheless it is a pretty place to go visit with friend and enjoy the walk. There are a few spots on the road from which you can have excellent views from the castle and it's surrounding. There are two or three parking lots no more than a kilometer away and the walk from it is easy and about 15 minutes long. Only be careful that there is no handrail on one of the paths and you'll have a river down 30 meters so better keep your kids close.

Its location is amidst the fields, therefor its coordinates at Google Maps: 50.265342,7.318794 We parked our car next to the chapel. On the way to this chapel one passes its Calvary (stations of the cross). The chapel is located in a picturesque setting but despite its picturesque appearance it bears a sinister history. Around 1700, to scare off the population ,there were many places of execution where death sentences and other sanctions publicly were carried out, and this place is one of them. The chapel may be a romantic Panorama forms, it was once an execution yards where many people were beheaded. To surrender were there strange phenomena observed in which villagers regularly a female figure dressed in white. In the chapel it is icy cold, although the outdoor temperature is warm, as we can confirm.

Burg Pyrmont

Reviewed By Eyekaytoo - Leverkusen, Germany

We had included Burg Pyrmont on our tour of the Castles of the Eifel region of Germany. But we were disappointed that the place was closed even though we visited during the first week after Easter when many similar establishments were open and doing a modest business.
So we parked in the car park above the castle, took a few photos and then continued on to our next castle - Burg Eltz which was open with many visitors.

66 Minuten - Live Escape Game

Reviewed By Fromzewoodz - Eindhoven, The Netherlands

The service beforehand was very good; I emailed if their rooms were available in English as well and I received a friendly email in German ánd English, writing it would be arranged. The reception was most welcome and enthusiastic. Our host Adina was fluent in English and we found out later that texts in the room were translated especially for us.
A lot of work was put into the storyline and Adina made sure we had a feel of the story before starting. We played the room "Leichenschausmaus" and it was a thrill from beginning to end. A lot of variation in the puzzles, which were well balanced and they fit in the storyline. Good effects to add to the experience and tension and a few surprises that I haven't seen in an escape room before, after playing quite a few. The atmosphere was just right and all members of our team really got the buzz that you hope for in an escape room experience that lasted the rest of the weekend.
I would highly recommend this room to both beginning and experienced players. Recommended group size is 4 persons.
My compliments to the staff, which went out of their way to facilitate us, for creating such an awesome experience.
