The Middle Rhine Valley is the romantic part of one of Europe's big rivers. It is here between steep hills that the river develops its dramatic quality (Loreley, medieval Castles and more). Although this is a prime destination of tourism there are not some many places where you can find decent food in a nice environment. The Merowingerhof is definitely one of them.
You find this small restaurant in a townhouse a couple of meters from the river banks and the historical landmarks. In the summer the restaurant is extended to the inner courtyard.
The food is regional/German but of high quality, i.e. carefully prepared and cooked to the point. Nice list of regional wines (here there are not the big names, but some high quality Rieslings which follow still the traditional philosophy, i.e.not simply dry, but a subtle balance of fruit and acidity. As Andernach is close to the Ahr Valley which is famous for being the northernmost red wine zone in Europe, they serve also some pinot noir from there.

Wirklich guter Italiener. Man sollte sich jedoch darauf beschränken auch etwas italienisches zu essen. Steak und Fisch ist nicht das Ding der Köche. Alles andere stimmt.

The whole walk up to this castle is the beginning of an experience. Inside the castle it is not immediately obvious where the restaurant is located - in the cellar- but that just shows how huge the castle is. The cellar is is ventilated and has nicely curved white ceiling sections with clear-cut lines complemented by white walls coupled with original stone walls. The walls have been sparsely decorated with original musical instruments which each receives illumination from a lamp as were they pieces of art. Other pictures include black white photography with a musical theme. On the stone walls old style painting dominate. The tables and chairs have real white covers in high quality, properly oldfashioned and ironed. The tables even have real colourful flowers which break up the white and stone wall in black and white and grey.
The food is also of the highest quality. The proper menu, as opposed to a la carte, is hard to find (at the very back of the menu were normally the Deserts would be). this is in fact very good value at around 49 Euros which include five dishes, including soup, cod, steak, munster cheese, and dessert. The house aperitif was worth the recommendation.
It is hard to find this level of restaurant in this area. I am certainly going to take customers here as the interior is as impressive as the menu.

3 of us ate here on business, portions very generous and really good quality. No hesitation in saying we will return on our next visit. Very much a locals place and prices very good. Sufficient English spoken to get by and its a credit to the couple who run it. If I lived locally then it would be my local Italian!

A good range of italian dishes. The group of us ordered a wide range of both starters and main meals and everyone enjoyed and ate what was served.
Pleasant staff who and as the place is relatively small it developed a great atmosphere, even on a Tuesday evening.

I had fried rice and peanut sauce, absolutely scrumptious! Food was ready in no time. I'll be back next time in Germany.

Such as I, haha.
The room is in bright tones. The furniture might still be of the oweneresses parents, so it seems to me.
Waiting is done with such a friendlyness it leans to chyness. Ah well, why not?
I would type the cuisine as of the 80/90ties with Italian twist a little stuck in former days. So certainly for everyone who dislikes todays frivolities.
Strangely enough a week later, handing in this recension, I hardly remember what I ate.
And, I, who likes his food well salted, found it on the edge of too much. I made a remark, but the lady said that nobody had ever complained ..... ???
Dessert, a trio of Italian specialities, was absolutely fab, certainly not oversweet, with fresh crisp flavours. Forgot to make the picture, grrr, my mistake
Winelist is International and for everyones purce.
And all this for give away prices, where do you find a 4 course menue for 30€ in Germany? Although a cuisine based on routine, I would come here more often if I would live in the neighbourhood.

My wife and a family friend were in Andernach to see the famous Geyser there and stopped at the Rehber restaurant to have something a little different than the widely available German fare. The restaurant was clean, attractively decorated and the owner very courteous and gracious as we arrived. We ordered a variety of Indian dishes and I have to say.....it was Indian food Heaven!!! Everything was done to absoute perfection! I have visited India and Pakistan and eaten many Indian/Pakistani dishes in both countries; in addition I eat Indian/Pakistan food often as I travel in my profession. In all my years of travel and Indian/Pakistan dining I have never found food as delicous as at the Rehber....hands down, the most delicious I have ever tasted. The chef came out to visit us at the end of the meal and it turns out he worked previously in a five star restaurant in a larger city....his expertise at preparing and seasoning Indian/Pakistani dishes reflected that five star quality. Well worth the stop and a heavenly experience at dining.

Took us 90 minutes to get our food. Did not have the first two choices for steak we wanted. Third choice was a Nebraska Ribeye that lacked flavor and had much gristle. Sides were good.
