Manresa (Catalan pronunciation: [mənˈrɛzə]) is the capital of the Comarca of Bages, located in the geographic centre of Catalonia, Spain, and crossed by the river Cardener. It is an industrial area with textile, metallurgical, and glass industries. The houses of Manresa are arranged around the basilica of Santa Maria de la Seu. Saint Ignatius of Loyola stopped to pray in the town on his way back from Montserrat in 1522. He also read in solitude in a cave near the town for a year, which contributed to the formulation of his Spiritual Exercises. As such, the town is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics.

The cave where St Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Company of Jesus (or the Jesuits as they are more commonly known) received his inspiration to write the Spiritual Exercises is a must visit for anyone with a Jesuit connection. Here in 1522 he locked himself away for 11 months to pray and meditate. The cave itself has been 'jazzed up' as one would expect with all sorts of venerative decorations. Enter via the adjoining Baroque church.

The Santa Maria Basilica Collegiate of Manresa (the See) is one of the most representative examples of the Catalan Gothic and it is also a symbol and an icon of the Bages district capital. Located at the top of the Puigcardener, it sights the city at its foot from the left side of the Cardener River, at the bottom of the cliff. The See is, without any doubt, the main historical, identity and spiritual reference of all the Manresans. The privileges conceded by Pope Leo XIII in 1886 turned the temple into a Basilica.
A beautiful church - construction commenced in 1325 but building was not finished until near the end of the 15C. The first impression on entering is one of space. The church has a very open design with great width, and side chapels all round. There are 4 quite beautiful altarpieces, including a very famous piece by Pere Serra. Small fee for entry. Well worth a visit if in Manresa.

This place is unique, in that it is the only remaining medieval section of Manresa, and is the only surviving covered street in Catalunya. A cleverly put together video presentation is followed by an informative briefing from the tour office staff member in attendance. You can then walk through the street itself which is a typical narrow cobbled laneway. Once upon a time this was where guildsmen (leatherworkers and cobblers) plied their craft. Evocative.

This bridge stands out! We were driving to Manresa and found it immediately when we approached the old city. It looked beautiful! I was so fascinated by it, that I made my goal to take pictures of it from different angles. That was fun! In the distance, Monserrat Mountains were watching us. It made quite a nice picture!
Truly this bridge was built by the Romans and it still stands 30 centuries later. Amazing! It was built in 10 B.C., during the sovereignty of Augustus.
I enjoyed admiring this old bridge standing in all its glory!

The Technical Museum of Manresa is located in the old water tanks of the city. A magnificent half-buried building that houses three big spaces, covered with stone and which are supported by thick walls and central pillars. Two of the three deposits host permanent Exhibitions of the museum; one dedicated to the Sequia, the canal built in fourteenth century, and which bring water to the city. This canal helps deeply the Pla de Bages to make it a prosperous region of Catalonia. The other exhibition is one of the most important examples of European ribbons. An industry that has close ties to the city and the region. With this exhibition will be able to experience and understand what life was like in the factories since sixteenth century to the present. Also in the museum run all kinds of parallel activities, such as guided tours, workshops, family activities, specialist visits, and so on.
Awesome place. Its incredible to see how were the textile industries of the XXth century. They have working traditional looms that let you know how the fabrics are made.
The museum has also a great exhibition of La Sequia which is a medieval channel (XIVth century) which brings the water to the city. In fact the museum is placed in the old water reservoirs where La Sequia ended. It all gives to the place an incredible situation.
Its a pity that this place still remains undiscovered, even for the locals. Really, if you are in Manresa, this is A very interesting place to spend a couple of hours.
