Hailuo Valley

Reviewed By Terence C - Hong Kong, China

We were on an old shuttle bus in Hailuogau with a horrible driver, one hand is holding a mobile phone, the roads are winding and it’s a deep cliff below, no barrier on the edge of the road.
The shuttle bus stopped in a Tibetian temple and everybody is requested follow them to visit a monk there, later on, everybody is requested to donate RMB200, some really donated while some refused.
The most famous attraction in the Hailuogou is its glacier, however, the glacier is a mix with sand and rock - grey in colour.
My conclusion is that such a visit to this poorly managed spot is certainly not worthwhile.

In the last week of January 2016 nearly all the main cities in North America and Northeastern Asia were invaded by snowstorm. However, most people will still agree that our earth is getting warmer. Before September 2015, I did not really know its effect. I visited Hailougou ten years ago and re-visited the place in September 2015. When I visited Hailougou ten years ago, I could still see the existence of the icefield. In September 2015, I went up to the Hailougou again on a clear day, though it was a bit foggy occasionally. I took the cable car to reach the top part (Camp No.4) and still could not see any snow there. I climber down the "track" and went to take a closer view. I could see the crevices, touched the surface of the hard rock, but did not see any snow or ice. So if you wish to see how a warmer temperature will affect our earth, go to Hailougou - you can see and feel its effect. Of course, if you wish to see snow, go there in winter and the whole mountain will be covered by snow (but the glacier has disappeared or is disappearing). To go there, you can take the public bus from Chengdu Main Bus Station, and the journey will take about 7 hours.

Luding Bridge

Reviewed By KodoDrummer - Yekaterinburg, Russia

This is a national treasure and key historic site of China, in remembrance of the Red Army’s great escape over the Luding Bridge.
Luding Bridge crosses the Dadu River in Luding County, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. This beautiful cable, iron chains, and the wood bridge was originally built over the 1705-1706 period, under the orders of Emperor Kangxi, of the Qing Dynasty. The cable and iron chains weigh over 40 tons. The bridge has a length of 103 metres, and a width of three metres.
The Luding Bridge has a significant tie to the Long March of the Chinese Red Army. In their effort to escape enemy forces, and with boat crossing being seriously insufficient, the Red Army planned to cross the Dadu River by using the Luding cable bridge. They used a diversion tactic to draw attention from the bridge. A small part of the 1st Corps and its cadres were led by Liu Bocheng, and Nie Rongzhen led the advance upstream from the left bank. While this was taking place, most of the others were advancing upstream from the right bank to cross the Luding cable Bridge. The Right Bank Advance Team was headed by Wang Kaixiang, head of the four regiments of the 2nd Red Army Division, and Yang Chengwu, a political commissar. The regiment had traveled 120 kilometers in over a 24-hour period, creating a miracle in the history of world marches by an army! On May 29, 1935, before Chiang Kai-shek's troops arrived, the Fourth Regiment of the Chinese Workers and Peasants' Army seized the Luding Bridge and allowed the main force to cross the river smoothly.
There is a ten rmb fee for crossing the bridge.

Moxi Ancient Town

Reviewed By SingaporeViews - Singapore

5 of us stayed at the Hailuogou Long March International Hotel (can't review this hotel as it is not listed in TripAdvisor's site) which is within 5 minutes walk from Moxi Ancient Town.
The main road where the hotel is, have modern grocery shops, eateries and even a modest supermarket.
A stroll at 6.50pm on 13 June 2014 allowed us glimpses of open grilling of whole animals that looked like lamb and dog. A skinned whole goat, completely raw and wrapped in plastic, and dangling whole was on display. There were varieties of vegetable and side dish accompaniments spread out on little plates to help would-be diners pick their selections.
We saw toy breed dogs, obviously pets, being proudly shown off by their owners. The residents here seem to have a middle income standard of living, with many owning decent cars. The well paved 3-lane road were flanked on both sides with presentable boxes of live flowers, planted whole. Remarkable for what seems to be an isolated frontier settlement.
Cutting into the Moxi Ancient Town was by way of a side alley. The path narrowed, boasting oblong tiled stones, Cars can and do pass along - but rarely did. Some eateries and pubs were housed in shacks that seemed makeshift ... but improved upon to serve a better purpose. Wooden poles, planks, disused doors, unwanted wood panels are arranged Lego-like to make it look like a decent abode. This is authentically rustic - the real McCoy.
Better shop houses had nice wooden facade, simple in design, thoroughly functional. Some had tar and brick and the obligatory faded paintwork. They are picture book pretty and not make-believe retro. Its the Real Thing.
There were signs of repairs being done to patches of the road - so there is managed maintenance of some kind here. The modern street lights stick out like a sore thumb in a scenery out of yesteryears.
The life is peaceful and slow-paced. Time almost stand still. What an experience!
Now for the Moxi Catholic Church.
A Cross atop a 2-tier pagoda-like tower. Shamrock-shaped motifs. Representing the Holy Trinity, perhaps.
The chapel proper, where Mass is celebrated, have wooden pillars and scaffolding propping parts of the building - suggesting that time has taken its toll. Still, the fresh flowers that brighten the altar makes for a working church. Pride of place on the alter is a white life-size marble statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the child Jesus, standing on his own.
On the wings are 2 other white life-size marble statues. One depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary and another the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus in her arms.
The trellised curved ceiling had 4-leaf clover designs repeated throughout. There were framed panels depicting the Stations of the Cross on the white walls. The light from the arched windows brought them to life. The pews were in good condition.
Mao Zedong's residence within the French church's complex of 3 buildings was next to the tower block - away from the chapel. Mao stayed in 1 of 3 rooms on the second floor of that 2-storey building
The stone tablet inscription at the entrance of the gated premises reads "Moxi Catholic Church and Site of Mao Zedong's Residence". Unlikely bedfellows in a truly tranquil setting. A Mandate of Heaven?

Hongshi Park

Reviewed By AlexTung - Chengdu, China

In Chinese it is called "Hongshitan", meaning riverbed of red rocks. It is 40-minute's drive from Glacier Park Hailuogou.
The Red Rock Landslide at the eastern face of Minya Konka is spectacular. The red colored rocks flows down from the white glaciers of the snow Mountains, making the valley looks full of blood flowing down in the green trees. Lichens in red color is what local people say. I have seen this red rocks in the northern valley of Minya Konka. But here this valley at the east is more splendid.
Same as other mountain areas, the red-rock views are highly dependable on the weather. 8-9 out of 10 times you won't see the slide even if it is just on the other side of the valley. The thick mist is common here. One has to be really lucky to see the whole red rock landslide near Yajiageng at the east of Minya Konka.
Originally the road goes through the valley and it's free but now the local people have built another road for those who do not want to pay the entrance cahrges: a very bumpy road and use the good road to take charges. Actually you don't have to use the good road and pay the money, the view is better when you go up, it does not matter which way you use.

The mountain of the famous love song of Kanding. There is a Cable Car which leads to the top of the mountain.

Caught the cable car up Paoma Mountain. The cable car was slow but I enjoyed it as there were good views of Kangding. Once up the top you can walk around the various temples, the best looking one being this golden coloured temple higher up the hill. Walking up the steps did make me puff a bit from the altitude. There are plenty of Tibetan prayer flags around and there is even an ampitheatre.
