The Kassen Canal

The summer of 95 the Minister for the Environment, Thorbjorn Berntsen, opened the Kassen canal in Hovag. A beautiful canal providing a new gateway to a pleasant little trip just beside Blindleia. The passage is 200 metres. The canal, which was previously an old sea route, has opened the way for boat traffic in to Kirkekilen from Blindleia by the Kvanneid fjord.

Entering from the East you may worry when the legendary Kassentassen looks down on you from his precipice by the tiny bridge crossing the canal above you. But apart from that it's a totally safe voyage. You may want to go into the Isefjær fjord to get an icecream from the local Matkroken shop at Indre Årsnes, if so you have to go beneath the bigger Naudsund bridge and take a left. Or when seeing the tall bridge, turn left 300 degrees and sail on to your way to the Western exit into Blindleia. Kassen kanalen gives you a tranquil rest for mind and eyes showing the variety of typical Norwegian summer resorts mostly of the affordable kind. And because it's so close to Gamle Hellesund and Nilen, make it a daytrip either starting from Lillesand or Kristiansand.

When in Lillesand, do not miss this interesting museum, which is housed in the Carl Knudsen Gaarden built in 1827. During our visit, a special exhibition showing 25 bridal gowns through a span of 120 years was the main highlight of the museum. After we bought our ticket, a guide showed and entertained us with stories behind some of the dresses, which were on display. The exhibition was arranged and presented very well, so there was no dull moment. After showing us the special exhibition, the guide provided a comprehensive tour of the house located at the back of the main building, wherein the original state of the exterior and interior of the building has been preserved. The museum has also a unique collection of tools, utensils and furniture providing a good insight on the daily lives of people in an old maritime town. After the tour, do not forget to visit the Museum Shop, which sells books, postcards, and a variety of souvenirs, which are mainly crafted by local artists.

Several different tracks lead to this little mountain top 82 meters above sea level. If you want a longer walk I recommend entering the first blue track just after turning into the road that leads to Flørenes from Tingsaker. Keep to the marked track until you see a sign pointing to the left leading to the mountain top.
Here's a streetview of the entrance to the first track:

Saltholmen Lighthouse

Reviewed By Gloria A - Brussels, Belgium

This lighthouse is located on a small island outside Lillesand nearest to the sea, and can be seen when sailing in to Lillesand. Saltholmen has been named after the salt which was earlier produced in the island. With its blinking lights, it serves as a landmark for sailors and helps provide safe passage at night. During the summer, it is open to the public. Our Norwegian host sailed us to the island to get a closer look. The lighthouse from afar seems to grow out of this island of rock, surrounded by water. There is a small pier, where a few boats can anchor. The 360 degrees views from the top of the island are just breathtaking. The lighthouse is also used as venue for cultural activities such as art exhibits and music Concerts. During our visit, an excellent collection of art and photographies were on display. There are also accommodation facilities - hostel style. Overnight guests can use the pier as well as the grill facilities in the picnic area. During the summer season, the tourist facilities and cultural activities are being managed by a group of volunteers called Saltholmens' friends. A visit to Saltholmen was one of the highlights of our trip to Lillesand - a truly enriching experience.
