Shetland Museum and Archives is located on Hay's Dock, which was restored during the building of this award winning visitor attraction.Discover the islands' many secrets through the exhibits and displays, and take a look in the boat shed where you can see demonstrations of traditional boat building skills. Also be sure to visit Da Gadderie, the museum's temporary exhibition area which hosts a diverse range of Exhibitions throughout the year.Shetland Museum and Archives is open daily and admission is free.
This is a fantastic museum, which appears to have been recently reinstalled / redesigned. The staff can be justly proud of their achievement. From dense exhibits of historic objects to more sparely designed Exhibitions, it is an excellent combination of interpretation and object. I would imagine they have still more in storage and were at pains to share as much as possible, but rather than seemingly confusingly crowded, their rich exhibit cases were well designed and thoughtfully equipped with just the right amount of text. It is a bit of a maze once you get into the main galleries, so if the day should ever come when more work is done, I'd pop another passageway or two in, but again, I'm sure the staff didn't want to leave out a single chapter of their history. Good little idea for indicating to visitors which objects are new acquisitions. Good hands-on exhibits and no audio features that didn't work (so annoying when that happens). We were there in advance of Up-Helly-Aa and were pleasantly surprised when the entire Guizer Jarl squad showed up. Wonderful afternoon.

This museum if very well presented and gives an interesting insight into how people used to live in the Shetlands.
Lots of detail, and there was plenty of information available. The people onsite seemed to be very knowledgable as well.
Certainly well worth visiting as an interesting and enjoyable stop.

Brochs always seem to feel very mysterious - their form and function appear obvious but the more you look around them, the less confident you feel that you properly understand them. Clickimin is no different. What adds to the sense of disorientation is its location: just opposite a Tesco's superstore on the outskirts of Lerwick. Originally surrounded by water and approached via a causeway, the lake is lower nowadays and so the broch is joined to the land. The main walls have been restored to about 10 feet. There are a number of buildings round the periphery of the tower and a stone with very indistinct feet cut into it. Worth a visit and you can do your weekly shop at the same time!

Mareel is the UK's most northerly music, cinema and creative industries centre, operated by Shetland Arts Development Agency. two cinema screens, rehearsal rooms, a recording studio, education and training spaces, a digital media production suite, broadcast facilities and a cafe bar with free high speed wi-fi internet access. Mareel provides a year round programme of film, live music, education and other performance events. It is a hub and a focus for the creative communities not just in Shetland but beyond, and a catalyst for the creative industry sector in Shetland.
I was here for the SFF twice. Marvellous. Perfect for the Shetlands and perfect for music. I loved it. Great auditorium and acoustically sound. You could sit with the people with the same love and talk... about anything. Michelle Burke and Tia Files were marvellous ..... Saturday was incredible but by then I was in Folk Mode. I can't tell you who I heard but I know it was beautiful. Sunday was a misty collage of lovely moments.....meeting Tia and loving her...then loving the music. The Mareel was a wonderful place to start.

This place could be fantastic. It's in the centre of Lerwick, convenient to get to and historically interesting. Sadly it has little information onsite and there is not much to give it context. However, it's easy to get to, free and has great views so it is well worth visiting

This museum is good if you are at all interested in Shetland textiles/crafts or history. The staff were friendly and helpful and the exhibits were interesting. I thought it would be a little bigger with more exhibits specifically about the history of the Shetland textile industry (there was only a small one when we went plus an exhibition about a designer and a degree show by the college students) but I enjoyed what was on offer.

The boat trip out was very enjoyable as the sea was calm. Although we didn't see any dolphins the journey was a delight. It was sunny at 10.30pm !
A beautiful evening with clear skies meant that the storm petrels were a bit late but we heard the brooding birds in the cracks in the stones and then watched as hundreds of birds arrived with food for the night and entered the cracks and crannies of the Broch. . Unbelievably we could still see at 1.00 am to walk back to the boat. This was a trip for the keen bird watcher as well as all who are interested in natural history.

A typical 18th-century fishing booth, which served as both the family home and a fish store.
Amazing little museum dedicated to knitting and all things textile! Really friendly staff, beautiful displays and just makes you want to get those knitting needles out. Combine this with a visit to Jamieson's Mill at Sandwick and ask at the Hay's Dock museum to see the pattern archives which are based elsewhere in Lerwick. if you can get to Yell, go to the the weaving shed at the Shetland gallery. Maggie and Andy will delight you with their knowledge of weaving and spinning!
