We spent a 3-day hiking tour in the Pati Valley with the tour operator Diamantina Mountains. The valley is obviously an incredibly beautiful place. To enjoy all the major sights (Cachoeira do Funis, Morro do Castelo, Cachoeirao, etc.) you will have to descent and mount around 300-500m in altitude each day, so be sure to stretch each morning and come a little prepared ;). We stayed both nights at Dona Raquel's lovely house where we had excellent food and comfortable beds. Showers are cold but at least you won't waste water :). Look out for the blinking fireflies in the evening.
Be sure to come with well broken-in hiking shoes, as riverbeds, mountain descents and even the trail can be slippery at times. Plus your feet will thank you after each day of walking. Also pack lightly, and bring enough water bottles which you can refill at the native's houses and at some sources throughout the valley. Your guide knows the places and the water qualitity is excellent! A good, small flashlight is important for the nights and the cave on the Morro do Castelo. Bring swimwear for the Waterfalls and natural pools, and a jacket for the cool evenings. When you organise your trip, be careful with the flights. We wanted to fly on our way back but the plane could not land due to the weather conditions. This seems to happen quite regularly...
Thanks to Diamantina Mountains, we had a blast in the Chapada Diamantina and we will definitely come back for a longer stay next time.

We really enjoyed our trip to this waterfall, and everyone else there seemed to as well. The water comes down with force and there is a nice trail leading down to the waterfall.
There really isn't swimming there, but you will get plenty of nice cool water.
The only downside is that it is over an hour drive from Lençois making it a bit of a long outing if you don't plan to stay long. But it is very nice when you are there.

We went to Sossego waterfall on our second day in lençois. I must confess that our guide sold the place really high, saying that it was the most beautiful waterfall in the world, which probably collaborated to my disappointment.
After 1.5 hours of canoeing and another hour walking we've finally arrived at the sossego waterfall. It was so hot during the day that we couldn't stay in the water very long, we had to run to find a shadow to cool off.

The falls are easy to climb to (after a 200m swim) and refreshing Going higher I think can be dangerous. The lake itself is refreshing and the whole area is beautiful and relaxing, with special note to the ferns growing and dnagling from the rocks in the canion.

Great hike to the falls. The colors of the rock on a sunny day are breath taking. There are many small water pools to take a swim which is refreshing when hot.

These pools were delightfiul especially at day´s end to relax and see the sunset colors (as the sun lowers on the opposite side) over the city of Lencois while you enjoy a bath in one of the many pools. Some link with others and even form small "falls" between them where you can sit under for your own natural jacuzzi ;) Enjoy.

We visited this grotto, because it was part of the package. It is beautiful and quite nice to visit because you will most likely be in there only with your small group, which is rare for this type of caves. However the grotto itself is not in anyway special. The food on the farm opposite the grotto entrance is good.

Absolutely worth the trip. These drawings were only discovered in 2005!
First you think of a falsification, but that's not true at all. Since their creation, the drawings have been covered with a fine layer of silica, allowing a rough estimation of their age. You can walk around and take at least over a hundred of different pictures. But mind the blazing sun as most of the drawings are orientated to the valley, south of the rock formations. There are 7 more prehistoric sites in the area, but these are not open to the public. You need a guide to get in. No drinks or food available!
