Daikanbo is located on the northern rim of the crater. You can see the breathtaking view from this look out. To go there take a bus named Yamabikogo from JR Kumamoto station and get off at JR Aso station. From Aso station there are two tour buses going to Daikanbo at 10:15 and 14:00. The operation of these tour buses is until January 31,2017.

We left Aso and were en route to Yufuin. We had not been aware of this attraction but somehow it came up on a roadside station. So thanks to Google Map, we got there easily! For those who want to get there by GPS, there is no phone number. Instead, input the phone number of the museum nearby and you can get there easily!
The entry fee is very low. Once parked you can reach the actual site in 3 mins. Some walking down the slippery stairs though. The fall is amazing in a sense that you can walk behind it and feel the coolness of it! It is a very ZEN place! Suggested time spent there = 30 mins!
I've been here twice already! Love it!!!

Don't go to Kumamoto just to see this castle, at least for the next 10 years. Once it is fully restored after the earthquake, yes by all means do come to Kumamoto only to see this, as perhaps the most beautiful castle in Japan. However, if you are already in Kumamoto, do walk around the castle grounds and take a peek. One can get a glimpse of the dimension of the earthquake by the amount of collapsed walls and massive structures which are still bleeding, with their guts and bones out. Terrifying, if you have been through strong earthquakes before.

Excellent place to see the water springing up from the land. It flows like a small stream. Many tourists collect fresh water from the spring for drinking. Ultra clean environment and ultra clean water are the attractions of the site . One should see the place to.understand the spring phenomena.

This is a beautiful old kabuki theatre in central Yamaga. The theatre was built in the 19th century but was run down and severely damaged earlier in the 20th C. It has been faithfully restored to its former glory. The restoration of the woodwork is excellent and the theatre boasts a revolving stage. The ceiling is adorned with historical posters. Well worth a visit.

Actually, we started our journey from Hakata to Kumamoto via Shinkansen, then "Steam Locomotive Hitoyoshi" (SL人吉, a traditional steam train) to Hitoyoshi, right after "Isaburo Shimpei" to Yoshimatsu, also "Hayato No Kaze Express" to Kagoshima Chuo Station.
Apart from the beautiful scenery from the trains, definitely you should try the snack or bento from individual trains or Hitoyoshi Station, also don't forget to stamp a memory card which is available on all trains.
Highly recommend everyone to buy the 3 or 5-day JR Pass (for whole Kyushu area), well plan your itinerary and reserve your seat at JR service counter at those main stations (e.g. Hakata, Kumamoto) more in advance.

I visited this water source in Autumn while the leaves were changing colour and it was quite a beautiful sight. The water is clean and clear and can be enjoyed straight from the stream. I recommend a visit to Ikeyama Springs if you have never been to a water source as it is quite exciting to drink water directly from the earth.

If you're heading away from Kumamoto city in the direction of Miyazaki Prefecture you probably cross Yamato-cho at some point. The bridge is not located aside of the mainroad 445/218, but close enough and traffic signs will point you in the right direction.
Every Saturday, Sunday at noon water from the bridge can be seen. Apart from noon, some tour-buses pay money to let the water flow from the bridge, so you might just be lucky if you miss the 12:00 show.
Yamato-cho is known for its croquettes (there are many kinds including horse meat croquettes) which can be bought in town, not too far from the bridge. Definitely a good option for lunch!
