A watermill village situated where the blue-green waters of river Slunjcica flows into the Korana river. Most of the houses were built at the end of the 19th and the beginning o-f the 20th century. Because of its extraordinary natural beauties and historical tradition, in 1962 Rastoke village fell under the protection of the State Directorate for cultural and historical heritage. Many ancient civilizations, as well as contemporary urban environments whitness that the water has always attracted people to come to its banks and settle there. For thousands of years, the waters of Korana and Slunjcica, and their flora and fauna, fought the laws of nature, and as a result of this struggle in the limestone plateau, a remarkable canyon was carved in for us to take pleasure in. Seeing this natural phenomenon, this "poured off" ("rastocen") terrain, a place where the waters of river Slunjcica pour off in several backwaters, leaving behind small elevations which then form watercourses and Waterfalls, people built a village and named it Rastoke. Here, they found everything they needed and stayed here, forever bound with nature. Rastoke is a village of ambiance value and authentic heritage when it comes to architecture, and according to some records, it was built in the 17th century, possibly even earlier. Most of the houses were built at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. People have always lived in Rastoke. Grain from nearby villages was constantly being milled here, and since its location is by the main road - which connects southern and northern part of Croatia - it became the intersection of various buyers, dealers and live stock traders. This rich village constantly suffered war damages and other social-caused troubles that destroyed it and set its development back to the beginning. Although people were forced to move away, the nature always stayed and defied the odds with its distinctiveness. Because of its extraordinary natural beauties and historical tradition, in 1962 the Rastoke village fell under the protection of the State Directorate for cultural and historical heritage. During the Homeland War in the 1990's, the village was completely destroyed. It was renovated with the help of Croatian Ministry of Development and Reconstruction. Today, there are about 30 households in Rastoke, and their wish is to renew the water mills and start running businesses. The prerequisites to do that were met last year, when the sewage system was built in Rastoke. Most of the households started renting out rooms for tourists. The fear of the future when it comes to their businesses is increasing, because the old road Karlovac-Slunj-Plitvice is not as interesting to the tourists now that the motorway was built. This problem could be dealt with earlier, and today can be evaded by organized accomodation. This is exactly what prompted the Holjevac family, who already owned an estate in the centre of the village, to bulid a small complex of tourist facilities, and to offer those to domestic and foreign tourists. The family company Slovin Unique - Rastoke d.o.o. was founded in 1997, and is the legal bearer of all the services the company offers. With their own knowledge, hard work and strong will, and with the loan taken from Croatian Postal Bank, the family turned the old hayloft into a cosy catering facility. Today, the company has an elaborate vision of future activities.
This is too perfect to be true.
A quiet village, a little off the highway, with old homes, some of which offer rooms to tourists, a sprinkling of restaurants, and cobbled streets that run along waterways that lead to splashing Waterfalls and tranquil pools.
This village was made to quiet urban souls.

Even though the renovation on the building that had been nicknamed the "Hotel California" by soldiers wasn't completed yet, it was very interesting seeing the various military vehicles and planes. Seeing the weapons of war up close and personal...even some destroyed...did add an additional element to the understanding of what happened in this country during the Homeland War. Photos and videos and stories from survivors hadn't given me the complete picture as being so close to these tanks, etc. and letting my imagination run wild finally did. Could not determine when the museum (in that building) will be open.

If you are staying in the Plitvice lakes area of Croatia and you only have time to do one other activity - the kayak safari on the Mreznica River is undoubtable the best day out. We booked with the Tour office based in reception at the Mirjana - Rastoke hotel. It is about 30 kms North/ West of Plitvice along the main road. The trip starts at 10am and lasts about 4 hours. The cost is 250 Kuna each including a 3 course meal with the biggest lunch platter of freshly roasted meats ( eg pig on a spit) I have ever seen.
The kayaking was perfect - it had exactly the right dosage of adrenaline - enough to keep the whole group eagerly anticipating what was in store at the next rapid, but not too much to scare us half to death! About 12 people in the group and English speaking native Croatia guide. Plenty of stops for 'jumping' and photos. It was the best kayaking tour we have ever done - really fun, exciting ....exhilarating even and great value for money. If a wetsuit is offered - wear it because the water temperature drops rapidly about half way down the river. Kayaks are very stable and I don't think any of our group flipped out. The river water was crystal clear and passed through beautiful Canyons and uninhabited woods. There were about 10 Waterfalls and we crossed all of them in the kayak - with a bit of help and a push from our experienced guide - except one which was about 8 metres high and you could either jump or walk around. Shoes and helmet are provided - just bring some water and enjoy!!

Situated in the woods just outside Karlovac, this well maintained castle and its surroundings make great one-hour (or so) trip. Entrance fee is 10 kn, which includes the exhibits and access to the tower with splendid 360 view. There are several paths around the castle, some of which take you to the near-by church (5 mins walk) and further on to town (30 mins walk). Dont expect too much from the exhibits, but the view is great!

Freshwater aquarium Aquatika presents the flora and fauna of Croatian rivers and lakes, geological history, traditional culture and history of the basin of four Karlovac rivers.Visitors can witness richness of life in rivers and lakes, and more than one hundred Freshwater fish species, of which 40 are endemic. This is an EU project financed from European Development Fund.
Visited this aquarium with my nephew. I really enjoyed it. He visited this place in the past, but still loves it. Karlovac is a city very much famous for its rivers so this was a very much needed edition to it. It's very informative. I would visit again. Staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Absolutely must visit place in Ogulin. The house is dedicated to the famous local children book writer Ivana Brlic Mazuranic and is situated near the old Frankopan family fortress in the center of Ogulin.
I visited it with my bicycle crew on our way from Zagreb to Motovun. We stayed over night near the Ogulin and had a great time all the way. The people from Tourist Board were really welcoming to us and one of their gifts was the visit to this original establishment.
The house describes the fairy tales of Ivana B.M., it's very interactive, modern, fun and must see place for every kid. If you ever visit Ogulin just GO there - no matter how old you are.
Contact them first (just in case they are full at the time) and you will be welcomed in a world of fantasy, followed by the real warmth of the local people.

I visited Ogulin while cycling from Zagreb to the old town of Motovun in Istria. It was the first day stop of a three day ride. We were welcomed by the Tourist Bureau and introduced to the best parts of the town.
One of the highlights was the Dula pit in the center of Ogulin. Most people don't know that Ogulin was build above the largest cave systems in Croatia, with corridors and halls 16 km (10 miles) long. There are, also, entrances to this system and the largest one is the Dula pit, 40 meters deep entrance in the center of the city. There are no such towns built above the cave systems like this in Croatia, and a very few in the world.
There is a legend about this pit, romantic one of course, but it's for you to discover it on the spot. It's not so special to come and see it by itself, but the whole town - with an old fortification above the Dula pit and the Ivanina Kuca Bajke (see the review to understand what it is) is a nice place to stop on the way to the coast form the highway or the old road.
Just to be clear, you can see it from above (2 view points), but it's too dangerous to enter it - so it's not allowed. However, very popular place for cavers.

The Gardens and surrounding views are absolutely stunning. The castle is a short drive from Karlovac town. The restoration of the castle continues with the museum inside a newly restored building. The museum tells of the history of the area and contains prehistoric, old Roman and medieval archeological finds. The museum entrance is 20 kuna which is about 5 Australian dollars.

The museum captures a lot of history about the city itself and prominent people of different eras. It is interesting, but sadly, the content is in Croatian. Maybe that should be revised. Also, note that is closed on mondays.

In a city that is full of beautiful nature, this is one of the nicest parts. Definitely recommended for a nice stroll around.
