It is far from Tokyo, but definitely worth the journey. It has a friendly vibe, the sand is (relatively) garbage-free, the water is clear and clean; and there are almost no beach house, which means that you can enjoy the sound of waves, as opposed to tacky eurobeat blaring from some beach-house's speakers (Zushi beach anyone??).

Nothing amazing, small place, small light house, OK size parking. Good view not amazing. You do not come here just for this all the way from Tokyo. If you come this area and have time to drive around, then it is good to go. Very windy. If you have time you could do picnic maybe.
Very difficult to go without a car. The road is very narrow, confusing and winding. Please be very careful driving.

"The Moon on the Desert" Park is taken from a line in a famous Japanese children's song. The pretty camel statutes with male & female riders blend into the sandy beach 'the desert' and walking along in the sand feels realistically like on the moon. Also see the reviews of ONJUKU BEACH- more English reviews of the one-mile long beach.

This was a fun little outdoor fish market with some raw seafood and some cooked ready to eat. We stuck with the ready to eat option. Super yummy. It's dog friendly. Was a lovely stop before leaving Isumi after a little weekend trip from Tokyo. We went on a Sunday morning, which is when one of the Japanese reviews said it was open.

I just went up out of curiosity and was completely bowled over by the atmosphere.
Getting up to the temple is a hard, steep walk. Don't forget to pick up a stick to lean on! They're down at the entrance and free but you have to return them.
When I arrived at the temple compound, puffing hard, it was as if I'd been transported back two or three hundred years.
The silence! And the complete lack of the trappings of modern day life. The trees surrounding the grounds hide all the ugliness: no houses, no vehicles, electricity pylons, nothing.
Totally unusual and beautiful experience.

Hard to describe what is more impressive, the powerful shrine itself or the fact the ocean shoots at it from three directions. Take the walk around the back of the shrine and you'll come out at a spot overlooking the famous "Hidden Beach" of Ohara. THis is where Fuji TV filmed "Summer Nude". Pay your respects at this mystical and healing spot, and enjoy a picnic overlooking the ocean. Great.
