Museo dell'Arte Mineraria

The Iglesiente is one of the most important mining areas in Italy, especially for lead, zinc and silver minerals. The development of the mining industry and the need for qualified personnel led to the foundation of the Mining School in Iglesias in 1871. In 1934 the students were engaged into excavating some tunnels in the basement of the school. In the Museum of Mining Art, the APIMMG (Mining Surveyors & Mining Geotechnicians Association) has recreated some typical environments and displayed a collection of mining tools and machinery, original laboratory equipment, models used for educational purposes in the school and a huge quantity of archival documents and photographs. By walking through the galleries and visiting the Exhibitions under the guidance of the Association experts, everyone can experience unique sensations and get a deeper insight into the human, social and scientific aspects of the mining era in Iglesiente .

This museum is located right in the heart of the city. The fascinating exhibit provides a real feeling for the mining industry that dates back over millennia. The guided tours offer lots of information about an industry that has all but disappeared from Sardinia.

Il Belvedere di Nebida

Reviewed By Aga223 - Katowice, Poland

Belvedere di Nebida is a few hundred metres walk along a rocky cliff, high above the sea. This is an easy, short walk with breathtaking views of the coast, especially Pan di Zucchero rock. In the middle of the walk there is a restaurant with tables outside (you simply walk through the restaurant so you can't miss it). It's worth stopping there and having a coffee or something to eat when you're there at the lunchtime, enjoying beautiful view in front of t you.

Spiaggia di Masua

Parking is available for 4 euros a day. Access onto the beach is a short flight of wooden steps. Showers can be arranged through the cafe. There are beach loungers and shades available to hire. You can find the beach by going to Masua and just following the road down the hill to the bottom. The beach does not have an official lifeguard but there are rips and it can be a bit dangerous but the waves are fun and there was someone there with a whistle watching the beach and guiding swimmers while we were there midweek in the summer (early July 2016).

Porto Flavia

Porto Flavia is one of Sardegna’s wonders. This extraordinary monument of industrial archaeology looms over an enchanting coastline, gifting visitors with a breathtaking vista of the thousand-shaded blue Masua sea, and on the evocative Pan di Zucchero sea stacks, a natural monument 133 metres (440 ft) tall. A genuine engineering masterpiece which improved miners’ life condition and reduced mineral transportation times and costs. The port was given its name by engineer Cesare Vecelli. He gave the port his daughter’s name. The port was operational until the 1960s.

Quite a ride to get here, approx. 15 kms from Iglesias last kilometers over sandy road. Fun way to get there. Special harbour for mining goods made hundred years ago. Nice to visit but not an actual mine. Bit overprized (10 euro for 1 hour tour), but okay.

Centro Storico Iglesias

I spent a bit of time in Iglesias - an unmemorable place which gave me an unexpected souvenir: I visited in March/12 in a rental car. In July/12 I received a note from the car rental company passing along a parking ticket charged me 50 Euros for that service (I don't fault them for that - it was part of the contract). The ticket indicated that I had passed the appeal time and now had to pay 50.52 Euros. At no time did I see a ticket on my windshield or anywhere else! Nor did I see a warning about restricted parking. I have paid the fine (I may want to go back to Sardinia). Be warned when visiting the unremarkable Centro Historico of Iglesias.

Grotta di Santa Barbara - Miniera di San Giovanni

Santa Barbara’s cave is the most jaw-dropping landmark among Iglesias’ tourist attractions: a unique jewel, built by both the work of man and the action of nature. The story of its discovery is wonderful as well. It happened in 1952: during the excavations for the construction of an ascending gallery, in front of the eyes of the amazed workers who knocked down a rock wall, the fantastic sight of this impressive hollow appeared. This fascinating site is located in San Giovanni’s Mine and can be reached through an intricate network of underground galleries that can be covered with a train that, after a 700m (766 yd) run, leads to a lift that climbs up a well. Entering the cave through the narrow entrance on top of a spiral staircase, you can gaze upon a genuine, shiny, lofty underground Cathedral.
Rock formations carve fascinating and coloured low-reliefs, making the cave a fairytale place.

I don't know what it is about holes in the ground but they are spookily inviting and this one is no exeption. I've visited many such locations but this one has something really special about it. Once inside you're treated to an excellent and informative guided tour which takes you deep into the earth for just over an hour. The colours and shapes of the formations are very unusual.

Cascate Piscina Irgas e Oridda

Reviewed By MLRaphael - Braila, Romania

A beautiful journey in the middle of the Nature sprinkled with splendid views. If you are well prepared with documentation before you left home and have some geographic skills, it can say that will be easy to find. From Villacidro follow the signs toward "Monti Mannu" forest and after passing a dam then a small bridge you will find a junction: right "Monte Linas" and left "Monte Mannu". Need to follow the left one toward "Monte Mannu". This way takes you some km along the lake until entering in the protected area. The road can be crossed by car some km until it start the hiking trails to go on foot. From this point take the trail 109 then after short time you'll find a junction. Follow the trail 109 on the right for "Muru Mannu waterfalls" for about two hours walking, or 113 trail on the left for "Piscina Irgas waterfalls" for about one hour walking.
The trail 109 is not particularly difficult except for the presence of numerous fords that are not recommended to hike in times of heavy rainfall if you are not equipped with proper equipment.
The trail 113 climbs steeply along a trail which eventually leads to an open space area from where it is clearly visible the beautiful "Piscina Irgas" waterfall. If you continue on the trail 113 along the edge of the cliff on the throat, you can enjoy a splendid view of the gorge and waterfall, then can descend down until you arrive at the foot of the waterfall.
For those more adventurers and that likes to climb I recommend another trail for "Piscina Irgas" Waterfalls that will reward with a splendid canyon sprinkled with a lot of beautiful natural pools, little and medium Waterfalls ... all of this until you reach the main waterfall "Piscina Irgas". For this splendid trail you need to stop some hundred meters before the main road by car, ends. There is a kind of glade and you'll see on the right a stone house and a kind of sheepfold. So, you stop there and follow the trail that you will see in the left for the Canyon Rio Oridda. Pass over a little rill and follow the tourist signs. First you will follow more the right side then you will alternate left and right always following the tourist signs marked with paint. This trail at beginning seems to be easy and not so attractive but after half an hour of walking will become more interesting and a little bit difficult and requires more attention and maybe equipment. But it's worth!
This area is a good idea for nature lovers. If for the trails 109 and 113 it's enough half or one day for all of them for the trail through the Canyon I recommend one day only for this trail to enjoy all the beauties that it offers to you.
To visit all of these trails, I recommend to do it from late spring to beginning of autumn, and avoid seriously the rainy period especially for the canyon.

We arrived at the mine thinking it was shut. A knock on the door was answered by very friendly Italian gentlemen who advised us to wait for five minutes for Roberto to arrive from his previous tour. What an experience - Roberto is both passionate and knowledgable about the subjects matter and took the time to show us all about the money's history and that of mining in Sardinia. His efforts were hugely appreciated and in spite of us trying to pay him for our tour he declined. An enjoyable and recommended experience!

Iglesias cementery is everything but dead. It's monumental character can definitely surprise you. It is quiet and suitable for alternative tourism, something to enjoy in silence with a guidebook to discover the history behind the individual statues. In the cementery can be found also some monuments of the famous artist Giuseppe Sartorio. For the legends lovers, there is a great local story about the little girl with the circle, what you waiting for? Go discover the mistery.
