Fussen is steeped in over 700 years of history, from its roots as a Roman trading fort to its present-day status as a nearly secret Alpine holiday escape. Situated on the southern end of the Romantic Road, the medieval town center is framed by the majestic Alps, towering above the banks of the river Lech and surrounding lake region. Here you will discover late-gothic castles, baroque cathedrals and the oldest preserved fresco in Bavaria.

Yet another of the eccentric King Ludwig II's magnificently odd architectural creations.
Had the privilege of visiting this castle a few weeks back. A truly incredible experience, with architectural feat to marvel at. An absolute fairytale castle, truly from the storybooks! A must see if ever in Munich. Keep aside a full day to travel to and from this castle if travelling from Munich. And book in advance if interested in the castle tour!

Cute German village with picturesque pedestrian walkways. Full of souvenir shops, cafes, seasonal dining and cool clothing stores.
During August, it was busy, busy, busy. Enjoyed some escaffe and indulged in homemade apple strudel with ice cream. Clean, safe and charming.
Great spot to mill about leisurely.

We took the Tegelbergbahn cable car up to the top of Mount Tegelerg and really enjoyed our entire experience here.
The cable cars run about every 10 mins during the day - during our visit there were only 2 running, one is going up while the other is coming down.
The panoramic views of the surrounding area is spectacular...you can see the areas lakes, towns, and Castles as well as the nearby Mountains and alps.
Watching the hang gliders prepare and lift off from up there is really fun and we also enjoyed watching them soar around like birds - we counted over 10 in the air at the same time while we were up there.
We hiked the Konigsrunde am Teleberg trail while at the top of the mountain and were rewarded with some incredible views to the back/side of the mountain, looking towards France, Austria, and the Swiss Alps. The hike itself was well marked. It took about 30 minutes each way along a gravel, rocky, and steadily ascending/descending path.
And before taking the cable car down we enjoyed a very nice lunch in the restaurant.
We had a beautiful clear, hot, sunny day during our visit and it was so enjoyable and worthwhile.....you don't want to miss out on this!

Take a ferry ride on the local ferry, hop off half way round the lake and walk back along the river to Fussen. So pretty, lovely houses with well tended flower boxes brimming with red geraniums, people out boating and some grazing sheep and two alpacas!! The riverside is walk is through tree groves and has a 'country' feel, lots of ducks and birds about....
Take a hat it can be hot in summer and.... try not to need 'the facilities', as there (apparently) aren't any, once you leave the ferry stop!

Stopped at this Lake for an afternoon picnic while driving from Wurzburg to Fussen, along the Romantic Road. Located just minutes from Schloss Neuschwanstein.
We parked for free near a Catholic church (on Forggenseestrabe) and a pier. Walked down the paved path and located a cute beach next to the Lake. Enjoyed lunch surrounded by the amazing water and Alp's view, an delightful afternoon pit stop.
Highly recommend staying in this cute retirement town. Close to the Castle and Fussen. Nice walkways and great vibe. FYI we were unable to locate public toilets but were lucky to utilize the ones in the Sailing Clubs facilities. Many kind thanks!

Alpseebad (Lake-swimming -area)is the best place in Hohenschwangau to relax and have fun with swimming in the crystal clear Alplake. You can stay to fill your gap before your castle entrance or stay just the whole day. Open from April every day except rain.
We did the swan package today which included both Castles and the museum all were good. You can't miss this lake. We arrived around 8:15 am (left Munich around 6:30am) and got to enjoy the wonderful peaceful morning views before the rush. I didn't notice the blue clear water until high noon. Beautiful lake overall and great for pictures!

Basilika or St. Mang's Abbey, Füssen (Füssen Abbey) is a former Benedictine monastery in the Bavarian Alps Germany.
The Füssen Heritage Museum is now located in the southwest wing which was built under the architect Johann Jakob Herkomer from early 18th century Venetian examples.
The beautiful museum domimates the town landscape.
There are 1000 year old paintings and relics inside.

The yellow Gothic castle in which King Ludwig II spend his childhood.
While we did enjoy what we could actually see inside the castle, unfortunately this wasn't very much at all as there were just way too many people on each tour. We did manage to see some nice views of Fussen from a couple of the windows, but the chance to see much in each room was restricted as the tour only lasted 35 minutes, and the number of people moving between rooms made moving around too slow.
The same applied on our visit to Neuschwanstein Castle, only there were even more people on that tour and the tour only lasted 30 minutes.
People will happily pay big money to see the Castles, but the organisers need to have a lot less people on each tour!

I found the museum very interesting and quite informative as someone who enjoys German history. The museum has a multitude of panels with information, paintings and photographs but is light in artifacts. I have no problem with this but it may diminish the enjoyment for some. Its proximity to the two Castles makes it an easy visit and buying the combo ticket for all three is the best bet.

We turned the corner and noticed this little church standing alone in the meadow. It has a very pretty interior, which was lovely to wander around, or sit quietly and reflect. Neuschwanstein Castle is just up the hill on the left from the church.
