Basilica di Aquileia

Reviewed By Nicholas H - London, United Kingdom

One of the most extraordinary religious buildings in Western Christendom. Only one of the original two Basilicas remains and that is extraordinary, with the most exquisite floor mosaics in stunning condition. The vaulted wooden ceilings are amazing, as are the frescoes in the apse and many other features of the building. Better still is the crypt, which has equally well preserved 1st century mosaics from the house demolished to make way for the Basilica site. There is a wonderful bell tower, which can be ascended by anyone who is enthusiastic and fit enough. The whole site can be appreciated from the spacious courtyard at the front. There is also a 20th century war time cemetery behind the Basilica. Visiting here is a truly evocative experience.

Sacrario Militare di Redipuglia

For the men in our group this memorial site and small museum were interesting. For the first time we were seeing a World War I monument. We had all seen the WWII American cemetery in Normandy, France, but never one like this.
The museum was well done. There was plenty of artifacts found in the battleground to see, including a mock-up of a trench line complete with barbed wire. I enjoyed examining the various small arms pistols and rifles. Then there were the machine guns and heavy artillery pieces with wooden wheels.
Across from the museum was the monolithic memorial with hundreds of steps leading to the top. We were struck by the enormity, symmetry, and meticulous inscription of the fallen soldiers' names on the steps. The solitude of the moment with the absence of other tourists and tour buses made the experience more reverent.

Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli

We retained Simonetta di Paoli (depaolisimonetta (at) gmail.com ) to show us around this incredible school. It provides a 3 year program for 150 students who come from around the world. The floors of the school are mosaics. The walls are chock-a-block with mosaics. Even the bathrooms have mosaics.
The best part . . . because our guide knew all the teachers . . . was being able to go into the classrooms and watch the students working on their mosaic assignments.

Laghi di Fusine

Reviewed By Mandymak

We like lakes, and we went to many lakes in Italy, this is one of the best! The lake is small , but extremely beautiful! I cannot describe hw beautiful it is with my limited wordings.
The lake changes colours according to the weather, we went there 2 times, one day it was cloudy, one day it was sunny.. the colours were different, but Bothe were glorious!
This lake was very quiet, you may walking around it, or bicycling , or hiking around the mountain there.
Parking was not enough, so recommended to go earlier.
There was a hotel there with restaurant , the view was excellent, and food was good too! and also a kiosk there , you may buy a coffee and relax there for half day!

Carso is the area behind Trieste: a hilly place with special flora and fauna due to its geological characteristics. Small rivers run underground and form caves which are the delight of speleologists. It is home to wild orchids and particularly beautiful in the autumn when the reds and yellows of the leaves are stunning
Both in the Italian and Slovenian side it is dotted with small picturesque villages.
There are many simple taverns where you can taste the local cuisine at very reasonable prices

I made appointment for visit with Miss Giulia and I came this Monday morning with my students of the University for the third age from Izola, Slovenia. It was incredible how Giulia caught our attention and how interesting she explained about dinosaurus in the area, showed and explained us movie about the site, shoed us remains "in situ" and she added aloso the theme about carbonisation. For the end we tried to eat black coal - sueprise: delisious sweet!

Kleine Berlin

Reviewed By TGB40 - Calgary, Canada

Had read about Klein Berlin and seriously tried to get there. Went to their website to try to determine hours they were open. To no avail. Called directly but no one spoke English. That's fair. Called the Trieste travel information only to be told that they only are open on Fridays. Unable to determine if this is because it is late Septemer. Be sure to call before going.
