Fredericia Vold

Reviewed By Stewart C - Chatham, United Kingdom

We visited the Fredericia ‘Vold’ whilst visiting the town during a day stop over. We had used a local walking tour but with a bit of pre planning and investigation, the visitor could quite easily conduct themselves around the town themselves.
The ‘Vold’ is a series of substantial earth works built to protect the town and port from invading armies (we believe that there was conflict with Sweden at the time). These defences are still well preserved and a student of military history of this period may find a walk along the line of earthwork bastions interesting. Failing that it is a pleasant enough area to walk, away from the traffic and on an elevated footpath with views back over the town.
There are plenty of cannons and mortars and examples of ordnance here as well to look at which helps the visitor make sense of the layout. Some of the gateways made through the lines of defence are worth a look with their substantial doors and arches complete with dates making for some good photos.
If you are visiting, make sure to take a trip up the water tower (small charge for entry), as the views from the top are quite remarkable and certainly worth climbing the stairs for.

Fredericia Theater

Reviewed By sloehand - Sisimiut, Greenland

Fredericia Teater is not just another small town theatre.
As a resident of Fredericia I have seen quite a few of their productions, and particularly their musicals are exceptional; - they tend to be the latest, and often quirkiest, from off-Broadway, but recently with some of their own productions.
Recently, though, they have had an attention-upgrade, since they were chosen to host the European staging of Disneys Aladdin.
Generally they work under the constraints that a tight budget and relatively small stage give them, but they use it to their advantage.
Only minus for foreigners: Only in Danish...
Note: I get one ticket for each performance in return for writing a review of the show (meaning that my wife and I get a 50% discount), but this review is not part of that deal.
They do not specify, nor censor my reviews, as I post them om my personal blog.

Landsoldatpladsen

Reviewed By Stewart C - Chatham, United Kingdom

We paused at the Landsoldat Pladsen (The Brave Soldier Square), whilst on an organised walking tour of Fredericia We had just visited the ‘Vold’ or the old town ramparts and our guide led us here for a short break before moving on.
The square is not large and is dominated by a statue of a Danish soldier of the period of the 1849 siege of Frederica when the forces of the Schleswig-Holstein state were first kept out, and then pushed back from the town in a famous military victory. The statue stands on a plinth surrounded by a well-manicured lawn with benches provided, making it a pleasant area to rest and relax.
To one side is a small military museum, and entrance was free on the day of our visit. There are also limited toilet facilities at the rear of the building. On the day of our visit the weather was warm and sunny, and a number of tourists were visiting the area and having their photos taken in front of the statue.
Following our stay here, our party moved off to visit the ‘White Water Tower’ which is located nearby.
If you are visiting the town here and are looking for a quiet spot to sit on a sunny day and watch the world go by, then as visit here will not disappoint.

We discovered this jewel by accident - we were staying in the hotel in neighborhood. It is fabulous minature of the old Fredericia, and some buildings can be still found in the present town. And that's what we did - walked through the old minitown and then took the map from there and walked through real town: street names are same, so it's easy to spot the historical buildings.

This is an interesting stop in Fredericia. But it is not generally open to the public. We were part of a tour, and arranged to have the church opened for our visit. Joining a tour is a good way to see the church, because you get to hear the interesting history, as to how this town was set up and from where it attracted its settlers. The cemetery outside the church is also worth a visit. The bushes are well-manicured and each plot is outlined with vegetation. No grass anywhere. Very nicely designed and maintained.

At first glance, this does not look anything like a typical cemetery that an American might imagine. But the beautiful granite boulders are headstones and neatly manicured hedgerows divide burial plots from one another. Flowers and shrubs bloomed in fantastic riots of color. One would be hard-pressed to find a weed growing anywhere on the grounds. We happened upon a groundskeeper who was smiling, of course, and he told us how his work brought him happiness. With all respect to the families whose loved ones rest here, this is a remarkable place that should be visited by anyone who loves beauty and peace.
