This award-winning Museum is home to the National Folklife Collection which represents traditional life in Ireland throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Fascinating artefacts deal with domestic life, agriculture, fishing and hunting, clothing and textiles, furniture and fittings, trades and crafts, transport, sports and leisure and religion. Set in the spectacular grounds of Turlough Park, Castlebar, Co. Mayo the Museum treats visitors to a taste of how our ancestors lived their daily lives, in both difficult and joyful times. The excellent ‘hands-on’ public programmes which run throughout the year, consist of art and craft workshops, demonstrations and Performances and runs alongside the exciting programme of temporary Exhibitions which are ongoing throughout the year. Opening Times: The Museum opening hours are: Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm • Sunday 2pm-5pm • Closed Mondays (including Bank Holidays), Christmas Day and Good Friday. Admission to the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life is FREE. Shop & Café open.
The only national museum not in Dublin, they've gone out of there way to make the experience hands-on. There's so much information spread over three floors that you could stay here for a long time. It's free, like all the national museums, and although it's a bit out of the way, you should visit if you're in the area to learn more about Irish life.

Have visited Micks many a time for lunch time drinks and always receive a warm welcome.A excellent place to watch the racing.
The evening visit was much busier but with no loss of charm. If you manage to get a seat keep it!
Mick is always the total gentleman and always has time for you.
All staff very friendly,a credit to Mick i'm sure.
Always serving a top class pint, and this visit we also sampled a few gin and tonics as Mick Byrnes is also part of the Castlebar Gin Trail.
A great old style pub which is difficult to leave.
Thank you Mick.

The Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, Co. Mayo, has been providing an arts service to the people of Mayo for the last 20 years. Housed in one of the oldest existing linen halls in Ireland in the heart of Castlebar town, is home to a gorgeous intimate performance space, a visual art gallery, coffee shop, and an art workshop space. The Linenhall programmes local, national and international arts events and activities; supports those working in the arts who live in the region and provides opportunities for all in the community to participate in making art.
Happened upon Linenhall Arts Centre during a visit to Castlebar. Service was excellent, the food fantastic and really quick. Would love to visit again and try more so next time we head to the west of Ireland it's first on the list for Castlebar. Well worth a visit! I didn't get to see the art work but my husband went up to have a look and said there were some great things to see.

Stand up Paddle Boarding at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar, Our instructor Jarlath was so attentive and calm at all times and made it so much fun. We had a great family bonding day, although I was the nervous one to begin with, I actually succeeded in standing up within a short time of being on the lake, thanks to Jarlath's patience and clear instructions. Our son enjoyed having his parents enjoy an experience completely out of their comfort zone. The rest of our children are so proud of us and we have the photos to prove it all. I would absolutely recommend a visit, especially with Jarlath who is so professional and friendly and knowledgeable. Can't wait to bring the rest of the family along. Caroline & Shay R.

'Jacks Old Cottage' is a Heritage cottage from the 1800's. During the visit the guests will be brought back in time to see what life was like during the 18th and 19th Centuries. Jacks Old cottage was built in 1830 and lived in continuously until 1997. The cottage has many artifacts that are very rare. The cottage is steeped in Irish history and culture.
For a wonderful peek into the past I recommend visiting Jack’s Old Cottage in Islandeady which I did this past May. It is situated in Islandeady off the N5 road between Westport & Castlebar in County Mayo.
A visit to Jack’s Old Cottage, built in the 1830s, brings you back in time to life in a traditional Irish cottage. Seeing this heritage cottage gave me an appreciation for what life, without today’s modern amenities, must have been like in rural Ireland.
Jack’s Old Cottage has been lovingly restored & provided with period furnishings from the 1800s & early 1900s. The cottage dresser is filled with pretty dishes of the type that would have been used at the cottage. The fireplace is the focal point of the main room & I found the caileach, which I learned is the Irish name for the bed/cubby close to the fireplace & used by the eldest in the home for the warmth of the fireplace, to be especially interesting.
Joe does a wonderful job of explaining the history of the cottage & life in rural Ireland in years past. On my visit he provided an informative presentation on the development of townlands in Ireland. Joe makes history come alive & a visit to Jack’s Old Cottage is well worth your time!
