Berastagi (Dutch: Brastagi), meaning "rice store", is a town and district of Karo Regency situated on a crossroads on the main route linking the Karo highlands of Northern Sumatra to the coastal city of Medan. Berastagi town is located around 66 kilometers (41 miles) south of Medan and about 1,300 meters (4300 feet) above sea level. The village rose to significance when Dutch settlers in Sumatra opened a boarding school there in the 1920s.

Just a few km from Berastagi center, the top of the hill is reachable by car. The view from the top is amazing on the 2 nearby volcanoes, Sibayak and Sinabung

This is really a market, selling plenty of fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, plants, souvenirs, rabbits, puppies, clothes, etc.. I bought 1kg of very fresh baby carrots with tops for my 2 dear fury kids at home, they loved it so much. Tried looking for souvenirs but sad to say, most stuffs were quite old and dusty. Saw 2 stalls selling baby rabbits, they were all so cute, and allowed to be touched. Puppies however were caged and were sleepy when we were there. Quite a few horses at the market for riding but we didn't try, you couldn't walk very far too. We bought some local oranges too, 1kg for ~$2.50, very juicy, most stalls selling the same price.

We drove over the Highland without making a stop . On the other hand we've made a stop in Berastagi itself where we walked over a small Marketplace with tons of fruit and vegetables . Attraction apparently was a ride on ( wild ? ) horses with young men almost excited as the horses were. Not to recommend , unless you're a seasoned equestrian !

We purposely travel more than 2 hrs to see the Hot Spring and brought our slippers along. We were totally disappointed when we reached there. We expect to have some landscape with waterfall but not all swimming pools. We stayed there less than 10 minutes. We would not recommend to friends if they plan to go there.
