Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

In this unusual place of worship, mischievous simians throng among sacred temples and lush greenery.

Reviewed By Peter M - Hong Kong, China

The forest and its key inhabitants are well maintained and well fed. The monkeys are playful and can be seen wandering around the local area as well, as they have become used to us humans. Being a major tourist attraction there is a bit of crowding and lots of people taking selfies. I was more inclined to sit and reflect and watch the various interactions between haman and primate and consider who was entertaining who??

We arrived at Sangeh Monkey Forest at the end of a wonderful cycle ride around the area. The area looked strangely familiar and I realised that we had visited here some 25 years previously!
The monkeys were calm and not at all aggressive and it was a surprisingly nice experience to have one sit on my lap.

We visited this temple, located in south Bali, with our cruise ship's excursion. This temple had a unique layout with 3 Inner Courts, a perimeter moat, and a Cock Pit. The first 2 Inner Courts have spacious well kept lawns, beds of canna lilies, and a Fountain with 9 water spouts in a small pool. Visitors stay on the main path that leads to the eyecatching red brick entrance gate of the 3rd Inner Court. The gate is encrusted with grey stone carvings. There are 3 sets of steps that lead to 3 plain old doors. Visitors are not allowed through the doors, but visitors can see the inside of this Inner Court by walking all around the surrounding perimeter wall. This wall is about 3 feet high and does not impede viewing the structures inside nor photographing them.
This court is what we came to see as it has many shrines with multitiered roofs from 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 levels and the unusual interior moat along the perimeter wall. This temple area is spacious (about a city block x a city block). It has several smaller buildings besides the many shrines. Perhaps these were for the use of royalty or priests. All of the roofs for the buildings and shrines are thatched and are blackened with age. Some of these had skillfully carved stone work all around their square bases which seemed to have been cleaned as they were free of moss and algae. They were attractive, but some of the large stone statues of gods had not been cleaned and were unattractive. Their features were covered with grasses, moss, and black algae. At one corner, the water in the well became special when it was blessed by a priest. A special tree grew beside it. The moat was narrow, filled with greenish water, surrounded by mowed lawn. There was no activity inside the Inner Court. The best view of the Inner Court from one end to the other end is along the 2nd side - the one opposite the entrance gate. The best view of the shrines is along the 3rd wall as they are all lined up in a row on that side. It took us about 30 minutes to slowly stroll around this Inner Court.
Our guide spent about 15 minutes showing us the Cock Pit located between the 1st and 2nd Inner Courts - by the ticket seller's table. To show the purpose of the building, 2 male mannequins had been placed in the dirt pit holding their roosters. Cantilevered Seating was available all around the pit to watch the cockfight. There was no information board here to explain the purpose of the cock pit - for entertainment? for religious ceremonies? A Balinese woman was quietly creating food offering baskets to be placed in the temple area. Modern clean washrooms were next to the cockpit in and had no attendant. As we left the temple site and headed for our bus, we walked through an ornately stone gate that straddled the road - a reminder that this site was once occupied by royalty. Shops for snacks, souvenirs, and cafes surround this attraction. Visitors should wear appropriate clothing for visiting a temple. Our visit lasted about 1 hour.

Beji Guwang Hidden Canyon

Reviewed By Karmatrendz - Jakarta, Indonesia

Located at Sukawati area, this is the place where you can enjoy exciting adventures and adrenaline pump. It's definitely not for children or elderly. Visit this hidden canyon at summer because sometimes they close the attraction because of the river or dam or weather, and it's too dangerous.
You must use a local guide to lead the way for you and this is a must, don't ever think because you're an expert rock climbing, powerful bla bla bla then you refuse to use a guide. Two year ago this place is very difficult to track, but now the local guide make it easier but still need a lot of effort to walk from start to the end. So follow exactly what the local guide told you. Wear a short pants and bring small backpack, because at certain point you'll get wet. Maybe better a pants like for swimming or for the beach. Some people prefer to walk in the water, but perhaps walk or swim in the water more dangerous than climb or crawl the cliff, because you don't know under water landscape, maybe there's sharp rocks or anything that'll harm you. Don't ever afraid or shy to ask the guide to help you walk or climb...
The canyon it self was spectacular, amazing and jaw falling scenery. It's really worth every single step you walked. The water color, the cliff color and rocks everywhere so beautiful, like walk in the other world. Near the end of the track, you'll find a swing made by local people, so you can take photos.
Please give a decent tip to the local guide, because their income was so small for a single trip to guide a guest. Sometimes when the attraction closed due to the weather, so they get nothing. Maybe they should consider to raise ticket fee, right now the ticket fee too cheap.

This was more than just a cycling tour, but a wonderful experience with local guide Mus who not only takes you on out of the way farm/jungle/rice field cycling treks, but also welcomes you into his family home and gives fantastic insight into local culture. The tour ends with a delicious Balinese home cooked meal. I would highly recommend this tour for the real Bali experience with a genuinely lovely local guide. I’m not an experienced cyclist however I found this easy as it was mostly downhill.

What a fantastic experience, a day I will always treasure. The moment we booked this I was so excited as I have always since I was little wanted to be close to an Orangutan. It was beautifully organised in lovely surroundings, the breakfast was delicious and restaurant staff so attentive. All the animals we encountered were well looked after and their needs considered. I was taken with emotion when we arrived and there they were sitting together a couple of metres from where I was standing. I don’t mind admitting I did shed a tear or two of joy. We were the first to go and have our experience with one of the little girls. They were delightful and the time just flew by, other animals appear for you to enjoy too. The keeper said to me at the end you can see them again I was thrilled, Cha Cha came to me later and said the same thing as we had the table right in front of them,I cuddled her and thanked them both so much. I cannot speak to highly enough regarding the whole experience, it was just magical. Thank you once again. X x
We then walked round the rest of the zoo, it is small but beautifully looked after and improvements were being made with new areas and attractions advertised.
Be careful when you go and see the male orangutan as he throws mud and stones at you, he is so handsome and lovely to watch but I guess a bit lonely.
I would have happily paid just for the experience and not seen the zoo but that is included in the price. Checkout the experiences on offer they are well worth the money, we got a good deal with a driver that took and waited for us worth shopping around.
