Casual fine dining
Stopped recently while travelling thru Lakefield and found this lovely French Bistro. Truly satisfied my eagerness, need for French cuisine. The seafood crêpe was well prepared and served with side salad with house dressing, very satisfying lunch portion. My wife went for the lunch special quiche, loved it! The was very surprising choice, rarely seen her order quiche, but met her expectations for a quick lunch. Loved the decor, true French feeling of a small Bistro. Now on our list if must return for full dinner.

Food is pub-style. Menu items are limited but good. Late night menu is extremely limited and not very accommodating for late arrivals. Service is average. Children are permitted. Decor could be updated. Relatively clean. Staff are very friendly, informative and very accommodating.

Our hotel in Lakefield offered a free continental breakfast so we went down to have a look. Oh boy! Windowless conference room, fluorescent lights, cold cereal, toast, fruit, yogurt etc etc. Forget that, I need some grease! The receptionist referred us to Jack's and we walked the few blocks past nice old century homes on the water. The restaurant was about half full and we were seated immediately. The breakfast menu has everything from basic bacon and eggs to banana bread french toast. I opted for an omelet which included fries and toast. It was huge - couldn't even touch the fries. My fellow diners had all ordered different things and everyone enjoyed their meal. Would definitely go back to Jack's. Oh, and the one thing we didn't get was grease!

After spending the morning with my family exploring Warsaw Caves, east of Peterborough, Ontario we stumbled upon the Lantern Restaurant at Harbour Town. We were following signs from the main road and were expecting a bar with a menu. We were pleasantly surprised to find a welcoming building with air conditioning inside as well as outside tables.
Everyone in my large family enjoyed lunch. The food was fresh, freshly cooked, and nicely presented. Chilled water with cucumber slices was appreciated by all. One of the few places I've been to in Ontario that makes a good hamburger. The family favourite was the garlic dipping sauce that came with the French fries. Absolutely delicious. We enjoyed a selection of craft beers. Our server was tops in suggesting brews that matched our wants.
A lovely surprise and right on the water.

We visited Frederick's twice while staying at Beachwood. The staff were very friendly and cheerful (nice to see). The food starts with buffet salads which were rotated frequently. I had pickerel the first night and salmon the next. Other party members had the steak and chicken and all were happy. Presentation was very nice and complimented the flavours. Very good dining experience when serving the entire dining room at the same time as limited hours for dinner.

Craft Beer. Fresh Food. Live Music! The Canoe & Paddle is an English pub in the historic Hamblin's building beside the river in downtown Lakefield. Known for 14 craft beers on draught, gourmet pub fare, top notch local entertainment Thursday to Sunday, and always friendly personal service - this pub has quickly become a local favourite. Now featuring an awesome outdoor patio to boot!
It seems that every restaurant starts out with great intentions, good food with healthy portions, then all of a sudden it stops. Well not really stops but changes the portion size, the quality of the product and now the size of the beer. Yes the beer stayed at the same price but now you get almost half the size.
We ordered beer and had to ask the server for the normal size not the small, “this is the normal size”, well it wasn’t 2 weeks ago.
We also ordered cheese nachos that came with very little cheese. I mentioned that to the server and the answer I received was that is the way it comes. Well it wasn’t 2 weeks ago.
The owner came over and in a very confrontational way explained that it’s the Ontario government fault with the minimum wage that the beer sizes were smaller at the same price of the normal pints. REALLY!
So I know that this is a long review for me but I was shocked not only at the sizes and quality but at the attitude the owner had towards a loyal customer and lame excuses to basically put his hand in my wallet. He just didn’t care.
If you have read my previous reviews on this place, I loved it.
So, will I go back? How about never! And you should avoid this place at all costs (play on words) it will be at a higher cost to you with lower quality.
Go somewhere else.
Cheers

We drove by this little town, and were looking for Kawartha Ice Cream. Google directed us there, and it was a nice surprise find.
What l like the most about it is the price. A single scoop is $1.99 and a small which is 3 scoops is $3,25. We are from Toronto, a single scoop of Laura Secord would be over $3.25 already. The ice cream itself was great, but maybe because of the great rating, I had a higher expectation. I loved their Raisin and Rum, very much like Laura Secord's, but not as sweet.
Over all, good value.
