Tomi's is on the second floor of a small building in an alley about five minutes walking from the north exit of the train station. They serve Peruvian food, chicken and beef, with fried potatoes, salads and snacks. Special beers and drinks are available, but don't drink and drive in Japan. They have a special roasted chicken which you can order ahead since it takes 45 minutes to an hour to prepare. The dishes are a good value, and the menu is in Japanese and english.

Amaretto

Reviewed By CorningPaul - Corning, New York

Amaretto is like a trip to Italy, in central Japan. The house looks like a villa from Tuscany. The chef has been trained in Italy and spices the food authentically (meaning not over sweet). She is delightful to talk with, but her English is a little limited. The menu is in Japan and Italian (in katakana) so ask the server to read the menu to you. Then you can select your dishes. There is a nice wine list, but don't drink and drive in Japan! The place is about 20 minutes from the train station by walking but is easy to find because it's the only Italian looking villa around.

One of the healthiest Japanese ingredients that I love is Japanese mountain yam. We Japanese love sticky, slimy, slippery food like grated Japanese mountain yam and natto... But they are super healthy! Similar to avocado, in my opinion. When we were visiting Shizuoka, we visited a restaurant who specializes in their local Japanese mountain yam.
They had a dining room on both sides of the main entrance, and I heard they have a large dining room on second floor. All the interior here is old-fashion, with tatami floor and low dining tables.
They brought us complimentary hot green tea, and even though it was a hot Summer day when we visited, it still was very tasty. Nothing like a locally grown and produced, high quality green tea...
On their menu, they had their top three popular lunch items. Since there were three of us, we each order the different item of the top three, so we can all try them. They had regular size and "slightly smaller" size. We all got smaller size, but they were huge and super filling!
Our lunch was amazing, and we were extremely full. With the smaller size, I couldn't finish... My hubby was stuffed too. So, unless you are a big hungry bear, I recommend getting the smaller size. Their tororo was amazing, super fresh, high quality with special flavoring was like a symphony on my tongue. The staffs were not very friendly but we've heard about that before we went, so we were not too surprised. They kind of leave you alone other than when they take your order and bring you food. Getting glasses of water from them was a bit of challenge, and they acted like it was such a huge request... But, we went there for their tororo, not for the great service. For that, we were very happy. Read my full review of the restaurant and food on my food blog, foodlovergirl.

The restaurant staff was very friendly and accommodating as she has a seafood allergy. Meals are offered in sets ranging from 32,000 yen to 105,000 yen per person. The meals are all made from scratch, and watching the chef cook was refreshing. The food was really good, and if you're a traveler, its only a few minute walk from the Kakegawa station. Definitely a Japanese flare if you're used to a traditional Italian meal. Delicious and different.

Sumiyaki Restaurant Sawayaka Kakegawa Inter

When we were visiting Shizuoka, we discovered there is more to Shizuoka than their green tea and eel. They also have their own special cantaloupe, persimmons, and guess what else? Hamburg steaks! In Japan, people eat not only hamburgers, but also Hamburg steaks, without lettuce, tomato and buns. I heard that there is one restaurant in particular that offers excellent Hamburg steak all around Shizuoka.
They have 30 locations only in Shizuoka! Even though there are so many locations, each of them gets pretty packed with locals. When we visited one, they had about 45 minutes of wait time. We expected the wait to be long, so it was no issue. We killed time in a nearby store selling loads of cute stuffs, and went back after about 30 minutes.
Their most popular item is their Genkotsu Hamburg Steak, or "fist" Hamburg steak. Or, you can get the same thing but just a bit smaller, called Onigiri ("rice ball) Hamburg Steak. The name only reflect its size, as big as a strong man's fist, or smaller size similar to rice ball. We went with the Onigiri Hamburg Steak. They do have option to add side of rice, bread, salad, or soup with a drink, but we didn't get any extra.
The Hamburg steak comes sizzling on iron plate, and a staff cut them in half and push the cut-side down on the plate. Thus, the cooking of the Hamburg steak completes right in front of your eyes. At the end, the staff poured the sauce of your choice on top of the Hamburg steaks, making them cook for a little while longer with the sauce. It was really juicy, with still a little pink left in the middle, it was not over-cooked in any way. The onion sauce was cuddling the steak so nicely, and yes, it was delicious!
Their "onigiri" size looked really small, but yet, it was super satisfying. Don't let the look fool you. After one bite, I understood the reason why they were so popular, and the demand for more branches everywhere within Shizuoka.
