My brother and his family live in Herford and we have been to this steakhouse numerous times now after receiving glowing endorsements from him. We most recently visited on the Easter weekend.
The restaurant is in a great location in the centre of town, it's a decent size and easily seated our large party of 10. It is clean with a pleasant decor. It was a little chilly when we last visited.
The menu is quite big but with little variation (however, the restaurant is known as a steakhouse so to go expecting much other than steak/meat would be a bit silly!). We were pleased to be given menus in English and the lady who served us spoke great English which made it a little easier for the non-German speaking members of our party. As our party was made up of couples we were also pleased that the lady who served us had offered to bill us all as couples - this was so much easier when it came to paying. We had some children with us who were well looked after and given toys to keep them entertained. The service on the whole was very good with the lady who served us being friendly and polite but non of it was over the top/in your face.
The food is excellent, nicely presented, decent portion sizes and delicious. As in the title of this review the good news is that the food is amazing but the bad news is that eating a steak at any other restaurant after this will be very poor in comparison. My partner wants to move to Germany just to eat here regularly he likes it that much. He ate a 500g steak by the way (from the 'under-the-table' menu which you can ask for).

The best-placed restaurant in Herford, over-looking the city and in super surroundings. The food is excellent, but the service is awful - once you have ordered the food comes at a nice gentle pace that allows you to enjoy it, but up front be prepared to wait 10mins at your table before you even get a drink, and trying to pay the bill at the end is arduous (we have eaten there several times and normally have to go up to the bar to pay).
Great steaks!

German Restaurant, in historic center of Bad Salzuflen. Restored half-timbered house from the 17th century. Fresh , German , seasonal food and local specialities. All food homemade. Attentive , friendly, english speaking staff. 50 seats inside , 40 seats outside .
Two colleagues and I ate at this rustic restaurant tonight. It was no.1 on trip advisor and rightly deserved this. The manager/owner? was very helpful, spoke English and explained the menu to us in English. The food was well presented and not too heavy yet very tasty. €120 for 3 x 3 courses with a bottle of wine between us and a beer each.

We go here at least once a month and have never been disappointed. Consistently wonderful food, large portions (always take a a doggie bag home), friendly service, and historic setting. Accommodates larger family events in separate room. I always have one of their fish selections. Their specialty is potatoes. You can't go wrong at the Knolle. There's something for everyone's tastes!

From the outside this looks like someone's typical house of the area converted into a part time restaurant. The decor, setting and tables are very comfortable and clean. Great atmosphere too. But blow me, the food is fantastic! Staff and service perfect. Lamb perfect. A little bit of authentic Greek food outside of Greece. My favourite and very recommended.

Highly recommended for proper pizzas - thin, crispy, wood fired oven. Home made ravioli also a total treat. Wine very good value, look out for the regular specials. Have been three times, and consistently exceeds expectations. Thumbs up!

The restaurant "Die Alte Schule" is located in a old timbered house with a unique atmosphere. In the heart of the city of Herford we provide a varied, kreativ and regional kitchen. Enjoy the Wines from our voluminouse Wine list and unwind with our excellent service.
We ate at this restaurant during a weeklong stay in Herford, visiting our daughter who lived there at the time. It was a birthday celebration for my wife and we walked to the restaurant, located just off the inner ring road in central Herford. Blessed with a warm, sunny evening, we opted to sit outside; the restaurant was pretty dead on a Wednesday evening and I think there may only have been another three or four tables occupied during the evening. The Alte Schule is quiet pricey compared to most of the other restaurants located in Herford so not sure if that had anything to do with it. We had a glass of Prosecco each while we pondered the menu and then a bottle of Primitivo from Puglia to share, together with bottle water, pricey enough at Euro 6 per bottle though the wine was very reasonable at under Euro 20. For starters I had Crunchy Quail Lasagne with shitake mushrooms and mango chutney while my had Apple onion, veal liver ravioli with sauce and nuts while my wife had Baked Mozzarella in a herb crust with linguine in a ricotta peppercorn sauce. For mains, I had, while my wife had Surf and Turf with Orzo pasta though strangely the steak was braised, which is unusual for a Surf and Turf. My daughter had Bouillabaisse Risotto with Monk Fish. I had the dessert selection and my daughter had the cheese board, both of which were just okay, perhaps a little disappointing. The bill came to Euro 155.50 before the tip. We had a pleasant evening with good service and would most likely return if in Heford again.

My husband and I ate here on a trip from England to visit family in Herford. I've been once before and remembered enjoying it so wanted to come back.
The website is easy to navigate and very informative, I found it really useful for planning our trip.
We walked here so I can't comment on car parking facilities but I can say this is a nice short walk from the centre of Herford where we stayed. Inside, the decor is fantastic - traditional Greek style shutter mirrors, wooden beams, terracotta tiles and white walls, it's very tasteful and I felt like I'd stepped in to Greece! The interior is also super clean.
The staff were all lovely - friendly and personable. I'm not sure if they are family but it felt like a family run business - eating with people who make you feel really welcome with no pretentious behaviour. The service was very efficient.
We were pleased to be offered English menus and were given a shot (of Ouzo?) each to start.
The starters were beautifully presented, large portions. My husband's prawns in tomato sauce with cheese were delicious! I didn't enjoy my starter of grilled peppers on garlic toasted bread however, this was my personal preference rather than there being anything wrong with the dish - I expected grilled bell peppers but instead it was green chilli peppers (I think ?) which I didn't like the taste of. Our mains (lamb steaks with herb butter, chicken steaks with wine sauce, mushrooms, tomato and feta) were again well presented, large portions. They were both exquisite, particularly the lamb which was cooked to perfection. The icing on the cake was the price (€48 for 2x 2 courses and 2 soft drinks) which I feel was more than reasonable!
We enjoyed a wonderful meal here in beautiful surroundings with lovely staff. I would return in a heartbeat and would definitely recommend to others. Thank you
