The city of Freiburg im Breisgau sits austerely on the edge of the Black Forest. Home to one of Germany’s oldest universities and a Gothic sandstone cathedral, it’s a hub for academics and medieval history buffs. Chug German suds at a local brewery, then hop a cable car up Schauinsland mountain, where astounding views and a solar observatory await.

Tired of fussy food at high prices, we were relieved to find this highly appreciated operation in every way worthy of one's patronage..our food was seasonal in concept, expertly plated having been well-managed kitchen-wise in respect as to balance of flavours > & nothing tricky/silly --what a relief!
My main was medium-rare deer with ,market-fresh baby, crisp textured brussel sprouts & a good reduction sauce. Oh Boy! It was good!.
My partner's main choice was duck breast..regrettably a fraction overcooked by French standards..so he was just a tad disappointed. But it too was lovely, nonetheless!
We liked the friendly & professional manner of our waiter too..another reason to applaud the energetic & highly competent team behind Kreuzblume

We ate here twice while staying at the eponymous hotel. We usually don't repeat restaurants on vacation, but this was very good and very convenient.
I recommend reserving, as the place seemed busy, even mid-week.
On our first day, my husband had the smoked trout starter and the lentil and sausage "small main" (I love that they have a section like that!). His spaetzle pasta was amazing and clearly home-made - tender and soft and very irregularly shaped. I had the fried trout which had a fresh and clean taste. The skin was delicious as well. It came with a large fresh salad and boiled potatoes. We also liked the assorted bread basked with sour cream spreads. With wine and dessert (we shared a citrus based one that was very pleasant and not too large thankfully), it all came to under EUR 60.
On the second day, we both ordered soups (pumpkin for my husband, the seasonal beet special for me). Both were just amazing. My soup in particular merits mention - hot, beautifully seasoned, with a dollop of horseradish cream and a goat cheese croquette. It was presented beautifully. My husband then had the beef roulade small main and I have the warm goat cheese salad. Both were delicious and generously sized. We did order wine, but no dessert (too full from a late-ish and large lunch, to be honest). The total came to something around EUR 49-50. Service was better on the first evening, but both times were very pleasant. If we stayed longer, I'd probably have tried a few other dishes (maybe the boiled trout, the gnocci, and some of the other salads). Well done!

The Kartoffelhaus celebrates the fabulous tuber in various ways and with great dedication. Our menu offers home-made dishes like mother cooked them, but also interprets potato dishes in a fresh and daringly new way with fresh vegetables and herbs, several sorts of cheese, delicious local fish and meat of high quality. In addition you can find vintage types of potatoes and vegetables used in yummy dishes on our menu. We also offer a vegan menu and separate menus of gluten and lactose-free dishes.
As another reviewer recently said, with a name like this, how can you not try it? Potatoes in every way you can think of! Loved the potato soup, and the rostis were among the best we’ve ever had. Would have liked the tasty veal in...Morethanks a lot and a great and healthy 2018 :)

A very good quality for the dishes you get in a Turkish Döner place. It's slightly cheaper than other places and the quality is certainly not worse it's rather better. Only drawback: because of the good price quality relationship it's very crowded. Nice and efficient service.

This was our second visit in this discrete but surprisingly good restaurant. Very professional welcome, good service and high quality cuisine offering classical dishes with a discrete touch of originality. Both our fish and meat cooking were perfectly mastered. Small choice of wine by the glass, good coffee. Good location in the old city, right next to a big convenient indoor parking. The room is walled with dark wood making it a bit austere despite some color paintings. Prices rather high, but the quality is there.

We always went there just because of the (micro brewery) organic beer and the beer-garden which is a great crowded (loud) place in the summer time right in the city center. It's also fun to buy a large bottle of beer and hang out with your friends at the main place with all the other people...
Only the committed locals avoid this place because of the owner which destroyed one of the last undamaged middle age buildings under preservation order in the city center just because of her profit (and her good connections as a member of the local conservative party?).

A fun choice: long tables that are shared, with tasty German food that is very affordable. The wine list is a bit limited, but there were beers aplenty.

We stayed at the Mercure and ate a dinner at Chez Eric. The setting is great, open Terrace, panoramic views but the set meal wasn't exceptional and surely not worth the money. I had the non-veg set while the wife went for the vegetarian set meals. Both were disappointing.
