Make sure you are very hungrey as the plates are HUGE!
Restaurant is in a neighrbor hood away from traffic. Thank you for the wonderful service and dinner.

Nice place for great time, dinner and enjoy!!! New manager
La Trilla was recommended by our hosts but I'd have to say not my favorite restaurant so far in our 4 days we've been in Atenas. Server was not the friendliest we've encountered (he was the only one working but we were 1 of 2 tables.) and food was mediocre. Nothing spectacular nor worth returning any time in case the food or service would be better a second time. Ambiance was neat but that's pretty much the only thing we liked about La Trilla. That and they did have yucca fries.

Don Yayo offers really good chicharrones and the ambience is good. This is a bar with good bar food.

This is the best place to go in case you want a real Pupusa. I've tried a lot of pupusas in different places in San José, but this one is by far the best one. Good prices, and excellent food. (try the maduro con queso /sweet plantain with cheese) My favorites are the mixed ones but you can have it only of Chicharrón

Antano's is a nice local restaurant in Atenas. Good food, beer and wine at reasonable prices. The Horchata (rice milk) drink was excellent.

Kay's Gringo Postres roughly translated means Kay's NorthAmerican Sweets. Kay and her husband, Tom, from South Dakota, started out as a tiny pastry and coffee shop and grew into the only place in Atenas and for miles around that serves real American soul food - heavenly cheeseburgers and crispy fries, several types of grilled cheese sandwiches, BLT's, amazing breakfasts as well as an all you can eat Sunday Brunch buffet. The cakes, cookies and pie are homemade and defy description. It's a gathering place for locals as well as expatriates, They also maintain a lending library with English, German, French and Spanish books.
Four of us ate there around 10 in the morning. One person had the Greek salad and the others had breakfast. Eggs, sausage, pancakes, toast- all cooked and presented well. The Greek salad was especially delicious. Our server, Mercedes, was efficient and friendly. They also have a nice variety of freshly made desserts.

My companion and I had breakfast here. For me the Desayuno Aleman and mi amiga the French Toast. Both done to request, filling and delicious! We sat on the side balcony well screened from the noise of the street. The waitress was attentive and solicitious. The menu offers a wide range of dinning choices for breakfast, lunch, or a complete dinner. The venue also offers a range of canned goods emphsizing German fare. My companion found her favorite, saurkraut, no mean feat in a Latin country. Also, in keeping with the German theme, is a display case of meats, German sausage included, and various breads, cakes, torts, empanadas, media lunas, and jams and marmalade. Pickles even! Superb!

We ate here for lunch. The language barrier on my part was a problem. I ordered quesadilla and was served a cosada. It was good, but not what I ordered. I will try again. It is on a busy road. The decor is charming and authentic. Reasonable prices.

One the best restaurants in Atenas. Only La Trocha compares.
surroundings are so so, you are surrounded, circled by the cars parked around the restaurant, no true decoration
the service is agreeable and 'tranquilo'
the menu has ups and downs: spaghetti tasteless and full of water, fabulous smoked porc, chicken meat over cooked and stone hard, fantastic and enormous salad with shrimps (a wee bit of salad sauce or olive oil would have been great on the veggies), decent fried cheese
water, beer, sodas and wine, a very decent choice

We live in Herradura and wanted to check out Atenas. We saw the reviews on here that talk about how good the view is. Definitely incredible and we went on a day that was pretty overcast. The food was good. I was feeling brave and had beef fajitas - they were good and I would order them again. My wife had nachos and enjoyed them. But the view is the thing!
