If you don't like food that is different and clever you probably won't like Georgio either, the man who runs this brilliant little taverna. His passion for foraging and to bring alive the rich cornucopia of produce available on his home island is inspiring and matched by the excellence of his food. He also has a great range of organic beers and wines without the price tag that puts people off. Cretans seems very keen on organic produce and less keen on monsato etc At this tavern the chef has taken things to an artistic level - but no sacrifice is made to taste. We had snails (perfect) house salad (simply incredible) goat chops (yum) and dolmades (delish). You get the impression everything is good. There's no menu as such, it depends what has been harvested or bought in that day - don't let this put you off as there's still a great range of food on offer. My wife who is coeliac and veggie said best meal she had had for a very long time and I concur. Can't wait to go again. The bill was a nice surprise as well as well as the ice cream and soufflé as a free pud and some proper homemade raki with honey. Fantastic

Simplicity at its best. Meat, fries, greek salad, local dishes such as "apaki" (pork smoked in local herbs), "staka" (a short but veeeery pleasant way to heart attack!)...Descriptions underestimates this place, honnestly. Don't go there if you don't like family run small taverns where fellowship with the owners is a "sine qua non", as well as sharing some "raki" with the "pater familia", a sui generis guy who will definately have some jokes to tell you (if you speak cretan-greek, that is!).
DO go if you apreciate local, home made food with fresh raw materials and picturesque local places. The tavern is open throughout the year, but I have been there only in the summer and we sat in the small side street in front, under a big tree and between potted herbs...
Regarding the prices...I felt like we cheated...

Giannikos Taverna is a traditional Cretan restaurant, a heritage from father to son throughout 3 generations, since 1880. The tradition that is bonded with the restaurant is well maintained until today. Enjoy a delicious meal, taste our local delicacies, enjoy your coffee or a refreshing drink under the shade of the trees of Prines square! All our dishes are homemade with virgin olive oil, fresh meat and vegetables from our farm. Just taste it!
Super friendly service and great atmosphere on the outdoor Terrace in the centre of Prines village. The host goes out of his way to help and all the food we tried was fantastic. Well worth a trip for reasonably priced classic Greek dishes.

This was top of the restaurant list in Trip Advisor but I think this is more about the restaurant list including bars liked. It's more of a brits home from home...e.g. john smiths (shudder), guinness and carlsberg with the greek beers and cocktails etc. Food choice is a bit limited with breakfast, omelettes, toasted sandwiches, salads and greek starters then mains limited to burgers, some grills and pizzas but no other greek food or fish etc. English/American rock when we there. Really good bar (although we prefer the Angel)

Our restaurant is a small one in Sellia, with nice view from the Terrace. Our cuisine is Cretan,Greek and meditteranean, and we cook only with olive oil and products from our region.
That was an accidental find. Fine location with the Terrace view, gentle wind breeze, fantastic food and friendly service. Proper relaxing atmosphere and QUIET. You will find what you want to eat and will not be dissapointed like in many 'resort-picture-food' junk restaurants.

Taverna Pelagias Yard is a family established place. Fresh raw materials come direct the papa's George farm. Cooked meals are always arted by mama's Pelagias long acknowlegment in local kitchen. Service observe high stadars due to the sun's Stelios care. Different kinds of local goat-sheep cheese. Local delicates as apaki and syglino. Vegeterian meal, salads dressed offcourse with plenty of olive oil. Fresh fish like Gavros specialities like octupus and squids. Couldn't be missed meat from lamb local and fresh spiced from Creta's nature, are some of the unique-specialities of the place. Local Roze Wine from the family's barrels accompanies meat meals. Other dry Cretan white wine like thrapsathiti, plito-dafni or medium sweet mosxofilereo. Kotsifali-Mandilari famous Creta's combination for red for more dedicate wine lovers.
family owned restaurant with great and moderate priced food. almost all was organic, either produced on their local farm or bought in the area. we really love the grilled feta and their own wine (intense taste though). as a desert wo got something like a freshly made peta filled with Crete cheese and a honey toping - strange an the beginning but got better with every bite. overall really nice there.

The family dinner we had here was extremely tasty! We started with stuffed mushrooms and vine leaves, followed by 'lamb in oven' and chicken souvlaki. All the food had excellent flavour. The greek salad was delicious too. It was a slight wait for the dishes to arrive but understandable since we were probably the first customers there. The village of Episkopi itself is beautiful and it's history has been preserved.

Smallish al fresco restaurant, obviously popular with locals and serving daily specials including fresh fish and spit roast specialities. I had suckling pig on my visit which was very sweet if a bit bony, but delicious all the same

Beautifully located taverna, with mountain water streaming all around (they just put a jug under a spring if you want 'tap' water). Completely relaxing and calming eating experience. Sit outside if you can.
Beware if you are an animal lover and order trout, as they will go and fish one out in front of your eyes.
I had the local speciality of Sfakion pitta (with cheese and honey). It was delicious!
Not expensive either, despite the stunning location.
Look out for the huge sturgeon lurking in the stream between the upper and lower tables!
