The 9 Best Things to Do in Kalkan, Turkey

December 13, 2017 Rebbecca Marino

Kalkan, like its neighbor Kas, is a lovely Turkish beach town. While most travelers spend their time enjoying the sun and sea, history buffs will appreciate Kalkan’s proximity to several ancient Lycian cities. If you’ll be in town for more than a day, consider renting a villa—you’ll love the chance to live like a local in such a beautiful spot.

Patara Ruins

Much of the city of Patara remains buried in sand, which has helped to preserve many of the ruins. Of particular interest are the Amphitheatre, Necropolis and the monumental gate or Arch of Triumph.

Greta historical ruins, well in tact. Spectacular views of the artefacts. Not a bunch of stones. It gives you the feeling that you were in that ancient city ones.

Toilets clean . Cafe clean and nice environment. 12tl each for sunbed and shade. Not as nice as a beach but ok to access water especially if you do not have villa with pool etc. Ok and kids loved trampoline in sea. Only stayed a few hours. Short free ferry ride to the club.

This 12-mile long beach is also a National Park. Its proximity to the ruins keeps hotels from developing in the area, making it great for uncrowded swimming as well as bird watching.

Sand dunes and miles of soft sand, visited with friends out of season but would love to visit when warmer, the beach is reached just past the ruins and some very friendly workers gave us some of their vegetables, the freshest broad beans...would love to return.

Xanthos Antik Kenti

Xanthos was the capital city of the Lycian Federation and its greatest city for most of Lycian history.

A fascinating, interesting and educational place to visit. There is so much inter-connected history here from the early settlers through the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. Some sadness that many artifacts have been removed but great pleasure in exploring the site and finding mosaics, beautifully carved marble and remnants of buildings from a far off time. the Amphitheater is very well preserved and the whole site offers so much to discuss. A definite must see for any visitor.

This is a tiny, secret, not too easy to access beach on the coast road between Kas and Kalkan, on a sharp bend in the road. You climb down many steps to this lovely place, but it's worth the effort. The backdrop is a sheer granite cliff face. Take a picnic with you, as having got down there, you may find that refreshments on offer are pricey! Can get crowded.

Patara Amphitheatre

One of the city's most important edifices is this theater which today, is partially buried in sand. The building was constructed in 147 A.D. and thought to be dedicated to Emperor Antoninus Pius.

Visited as part of the entrance ticket. It's a nice theatre with Seating for 6000 and set into the hillside. Slightly spoilt for me as a turkish mum and dad were clattering over it with their two kids when one fell over and hurt themselves upon which they had a massive row. Both a couple of pillock for taking little kids up what is a giant rock climbing expedition really. That aside look out for the large inscription on the wall near the entry gate. Lovely place to come.

This mixed sand/pebble beach isn't too far from Kalkans (inferior) beach, just get the local dolmus from Kalkan centre near school/taxi rank, it costs 3.5 tl pp each way. Descend about 100+ steps to walkway/beach. Managed by Law Council and has Clean toilets(Turkish style) and changing rooms available. Also new cafe that provides simple but good quality food & drinks, such as Turkish pancakes, hamburgers, etc. Parasols & sunbeds, about 5tl each or day.
Lifeguard normally on duty, swimming safety line to stop boats ingress to most of beach.

Kalamar Beach Club

Reviewed By Masons4 - Winchester, United Kingdom

We absolutely love Kalamar Beach Club, as keen Snorkellers the sea is so calm and lovely to swim in.
The Restaurant has views to die for, this compensates for the food which is average. 'Dosh' is attentive to your needs whilst sunbathing and will happily dash of to get whatever you want from the Restaurant.
Taxi's there and back are included in the price (which is stupidly cheap).
