Sanniang Bay has old wooden boats, a charming fishing village, with nice people, cheap food, and dolphin watching trips; it is not a fancy beach resort. The local people, and most of the tourists, are nice and friendly. This a great place to see traditional fishing culture, with most of the fishing families working along the beach or in their home courtyards just across from the beach. There's even a traditional wooden boat builder right in the village. At the eastern end of the village is a large rock outcrop with a Qing Dynasty mini "fort" that overlooks the bay.
The Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) or Chinese White dolphins as their called locally are the big attraction. These dolphins are rare in China, outside of Hong Kong, and Sanniang Bay has one of the biggest pods. There are friendly and can usually be seen on a dolphin watching trip on one of the many big and small boats at the main beach. This is also a good place to see migratory birds depending on the time of year.
For food, there are many small mom and pop restaurants that serve local seafood in the fronts of homes along the village street. At the small main beach there are food stalls and barbeque tents where you can relax for hours eating, drinking and watching the fishing boats leave for a night of fishing. The beach is more of a working beach, so it's quite dirty in some places, however, ladies in bamboo hats sweep it clean every morning. There is a small ecolodge, Ocean Lodge, at the western end of the beach that does SCUBA training and can arrange local tours. There are also some small basic guesthouses in the village.
Sanniang Bay is one of my favorite places in China. The people are nice, the food is good and cheap, and you can see dolphins and other wildlife you likely won't see anywhere else in China. Don't come here for the beach or to stay in a fancy hotel, come here for a unique China experience.

Before this visit to Qinzhou, I learned that Nixing Pottery here is considered one of the 4 famous, classic types of Pottery / Porcelain in China. It was a wonderful afternoon visiting the Showroom, and factory. Nixing Pottery has a history of over 1,000 years.
The business has a great Showroom with one room displaying the many Awards and Recognitions which this pottery has received both within China and Internationally.
A Second room displays the many forms of pottery produced at this facility. All of the items in this Showroom are for sale. There are well informed staff who described the nuances and distinctive aspects of a particular piece of pottery. The pieces here range from tea cups, and tea sets to giant Vases over 5 feet tall.
I was fortunate during my visit to have along a family friend who works for this company. I was allowed to go into the factory, and to observe the pottery being made. This included watching the potter work with the special, local red clay on the potter's wheel. It also included observing workers produce handles out of molds; and watching others polish the completed pottery. All of the workers were skilled at their craft.
The back factory includes a section where senior artists carve images and characters into the pottery. This is a precise component of the manufacturing process. It was clear that these artists were most skilled in their work.
Before leaving I purchased a large mug with an accompanying lid to bring home to Seattle, and to remind me of the wonderful afternoon spent here.
