The 8 Best Things to Do in Norrtalje, Sweden

July 22, 2017 Tynisha Seiler

This city forms part of Roslagen, one of the coastal areas of the Uppland province about 80 km northeast of Stockholm. Unlike many of the islands in the archipelago, Norrtälje is an attractive year-round destination. With a variety of quaint shops, art museums and galleries, cafés, and some small live music venues, this island is definitely worth a visit. The yearly “Jazz Days” festival gives the island a charming flair and offers travelers the opportunity to really enjoy the Swedish summer sun. Fly fishing is also popular on the island, while there are a few stores that sell bait and tackle. Hostels are open all year, a bonus for those on a budget. Buses run frequently from Stockholm to Norrtälje.

I was really expecting this Viking living museum on Birka island to be really something special. But unfortunately, when I was there, there weren't any scheduled events going on. There are docents giving walking tours only in Swedish. Who talked about the daily life back in the day etc. And a small on site museum of Viking life was interesting. The Big negative for this place is, when there are no special events for the tourist who arrived by boat. You are stranded on the island for next 5-7 hours waiting for the return boat back to Stockholm. This could be miserable wait if the weather is cold and windy. Since the only warm shelter there is a small cafe by the pier which has limited indoor Seating.
Also, for the tourist, be fore warned, Birka is very popular with the locals as a place to bring their dogs to poop. When I was there, there was canine & goat fecal droppings every where in fields & foot paths where the walking tours going through. The dog droppings being the most plentiful. The quantity is so great under foot, you can literally step and slip on it where ever you walk. I really hope the stuff is cleaned up when the outdoor museum has public events there. I really wonder why no one has complained about this before.

Pythagoras Industrial Museum

Pythagoras was a world leader manufacturer with their engines in the early 1900. As with many exceptional products, technology was faster in development than the factory was able to cope with. For almost 50 years, the factory was in hibernation and now it is open to the public as a museum where one could see how such a factory was in the 30´s and 40´s. Very educative! And as an extra treat, they start some of the engines and it´s very exciting!
As for the kids, they have a separate area with play area and the café will have some snacks.
This is truly an exciting event and amust for anyone who loves extraordinary engines!

We came from Belgium to Stockholm, especially for the marriage of a friend living in Sollentuna. Hannele Gladh from Resgladh was willing to organise a hiking tour with luggage transport in Roslagen. We walked about 80 km, in 3 days, from Nörrtalje to Grisslehamn, via Söderby-Karl and Nyby, along the Roslagslede. It was a nice and pleasant walk throug fields, Forests, nature reserves and along the baltic shore. The last day, from Nyby to Grisslehamn, was a tough but beautiful one ! More than once, we had the feeling to be alone in the world during these days. We slept in a youth hostel, private cottages and a pension. Everything was beautiful, clean and okay. All people were very nice and gave us tasteful lunch packages. Thanks Hannele, for organising this trip; we enjoyed it very much.

Batteri Arholma

This gun position along with several others guarded the northern approach to a major ferry port north east of Stockholm during the Cold War period. It was also the command post for all of the guns spread over other Islands to the south. The island has no cars and the battery is +1Km from the ferry.
The café serves great sandwiches and coffee. Whilst the visit is designed for Swedes the guides are excellent and easy to approach as you go from one visiting point to the next and there is good English documentation. The island is a delight if you have the time.
There are day trips using scheduled buses and Ferries from Stockholm or about five Ferries each way in each direction if you have other transport. Allow five hours (plus bus journey) to get the most from it.

These places are all located close to the sea and this also means harbours filled with beautiful sailing ships, sea-food restaurants. The rhythm is slower than in Stockholm. Many of the inhabitants know each other. It is around one hour by bus from Stockholm to Norrtälje. You need time to enjoy these places. There are small and interesting shops and galleries and you need to spend a day walking along the river that runs through Norrtälje. Vaxholm is the center for most ships and Ferries going out to the Archipelago to Islands such as Finnhamn that is large enough to host a guest harbour, restaurant, swimming and sailing. From Öregrund you can visit other Islands in our wonderful Archipelago where people come as tourists and where people live all year around. Sparkling gems everywhere.

Norrtalje konsthall

Reviewed By LeoAnders - Stockholm
