We started hiking at 10am and it took us 1 hour 10 minutes to reach the top. The ascent wasn't easy especially that we were walking inside clouds and the humidity was probably 100%.
Pretty much 90% of the walk is up on stairs, with the last 10 minutes stretch just being a steep uphill.
The views from the top were extraordinary due to the fact that we were above the clouds and it looked like an amazing white carpet around us.
The Volcano was steaming and was beautiful too.
It then took us 40 minutes to come back down.
The timings are for people in pretty decent shape.
Great day trek.

Completely unplanned we ended up on one of Tommy's tours. Because of his extended knowledge of the area, his enthusiasm and his perfect English (and very good German) we had a wonderful day. The tour covered Ventisquero, Parque Pumalin and the hot Springs. All of this in a very comfortable car and accompanied by a filling and delicious lunch. At the end of the day he helped us with our groceries and suggested to drive us to a beach nearby. We ended up on the black, volcanic beach of Santa Barbara where we could enjoy the sunset while he helped us organising a real Chilean asado (BBQ). It was an amazing day and I'm still grateful!

We rented bikes at Chaitur for 1000 pesos per hour and cycled to the Termas. Took us about 2 hours to get there. The first part of the road is tarmac, but the last 5 km was a uphill dirt road.
The thermal pool is very nice. It cost 3.700 pesos per person. Children up to 12 are 800 I think.
It is a big pool so when it is crowded you will still have some space. The water is about 35 degrees Celsius I think.
The road back was slightly easier by bike. It only took 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Enjoy.

Rather than crossing the river as in the past, the new trail stays on the east side of the river the entire trip. To get around the sections where the river is against the east bank, the trail goes up through the forest in two short sections--these include some big steps, a few steep 2-m vertical sections of slippery sand and mud, and lots of roots. Overall the trail is very easy but farily long; we took 7 hours including some fairly long breaks.
The unmarked trailhead is a few right of the restroom in the Ventisquiero Campground and the trail begins with a few stone steps.
We enjoyed the views and seeing the raw landscape of the glacier, the icefield above, the trees (coihue_) killed by the 2008 eruption, and the many landslides caused by earthquakes.
Recommended.

Lago Yelcho is a hidden gem in the Austral road. You can only see it from the Yelcho Bridge or Yelcho en la Patagonia shore, otherwise you need to hire a local boat. This natural protection keeps this lake as pristine.
What really makes the difference in this lake is the Correntoso beach and Bahia Leones. You can only access here by boat.
We love North Austral Road and will continue coming back again in the future (this is our 3rd visit to the area)

This viewpoint is free to all and takes about 3-5 minutes to reach the top.
There is only a view of the town and a little bit of the beach, and overall is not a good spot for viewing the sunset.
There is a Jesus statue at the top too.
Chaiten is pretty boring so this is a nice time-killer.
