The Harihareshwara Temple is located at Harihar in Karnataka state along the banks of river Tungabhadra. The temple is said to have been built in CE 1223–1224 CE by Polalva, a commander and minister under the Hoysala Empire King Vira Narasimha II. The main deity "Harihara" is a union of Gods Vishnu and Shiva. This temple complex is situated about 15KM from Davangere, which is the nearest town.
This temple was built in 1224 AD during the Hoysala reign. The garbhagriha houses the Harihara idol - the left portion represents Vishnu with chakra and shanka in hand while the right is that of Shiva with trishula and japamale. According to the legend an asura called Guhasura worshiped Bramha to get a boon that he shall not be killed either by Lord Vishnu or Lord Shiva. To eliminate Guhasura, Shiva and Vishnu took form of Harihara, came down to Earth and killed him.
The temple architecture is beautiful with many huge pillars and intricate stone work along the walls and roof. There is also a shrine for Shiva with a nandi statue, Laxmi and Ganesha. There are 3-4 huge slabs of stone with ancient inscriptions. A road next to the temple leads to the Tungabhadra river. A good visit, can spend about 30-40 minutes to cover the area.
There are many frequent KSRTC buses plying between Harihara and Davanagere. Ticket price per person is Rs. 15. After reaching the Harihara bus stop, one many hire an auto (costs about Rs. 30) to reach the temple.

they should change the name of the park from black buck to ordinary deer or chital as there are no black bucks there. The place has enough potential though nothing is being done.rusted towers and poor roads.good for a quiet drive, spend some time with your family or alone.
you will be dissappointed as there are nothing there nor any animals spotted.instead you can go to some farmland early morning or evening to find herds of chitals instead of the sanctuary.

- This place has an ASI museum and Kalleshvara temple, both of which close by 5:30PM. While the ASI museum is easily reachable, the temple can be tricky, as there is no tarred/cemented road, and there aren't any signs either. GMaps will help though.
- The premises is very well maintained. The architecture is wonderful, and needs close observations. The place has ASI appointed guides.
