Visit this 'big' museum in the small village of Shawnigan Lake - it's guaranteed to surprise you. For over thirty years, the museum has celebrated the history and the people of Shawnigan Lake (and surrounding area). Drop in for extensive information on the spectacular Kinsol Trestle; renowned Canadian artist EJ Hughes; the true Canadian Last Spike and many other significant history-bites.
This tiny museum is absolutely packed cheek-to-jowl with artifacts without seeming cluttered. The locally significant displays start right inside the door an continue in a small circular tour with a couple of minute rooms offside that feature special exhibits. The specific treasures I noted are a Beryl Cryer original book (Cryer lived for a time in Shawnigan Lake) and pencil studies by famed painter E.J. Hughes. Hughes in fact, has his own feature room, as Hughes lived in Shawnigan Lake. There is also one Hughes original and several high quality repros as well as a video made by the museum curator. The museum also features a special exhibit and video theatre on the Kinsol Trestle, another local treasure! This gem is a "do not miss" if you are visiting to see the trestle.

We flew out west to visit the grandkids and took them here to run around and swim. Great scenery, plenty of shade and open sunny spots. The water was a great temperature to cool off and go for a dip. Care should be taken with swimming as there is a fair amount of tall weeds once you get out past chest deep.

There are several ways to enter the park. Check your hiking site or guidebook for details.
Walking is great, especially once you get off the logging roads and onto the trails.
Kinsol Trestle is worth a visit. It's been strengthened so it's safe to walk on. Lookouts on either side are being built. It's an easy hike from the nearest parking lots.
