We have been to Nanciyaga a number of times in the past 5 years. Itis a good "jungle fix" with nothing unpleasant , in fact to the contrary, this is a modern well run jungle set resaurant with professional staff and beautiful setting. See the Scarlet Macqaws and maybe a monkey while there . Food is good, and they feature freshly made pastry... We good for brunch.

You can explore the lake by boat that leave from Catemaco. They drive you around the norther shore of the lake and make stops at little villages where you can get a clay-massage etc. for extra-cost. Nice for 2-3 hours. But there are definitely more stunning lakes to be found in Mexico and elsewhere in the world.

During our many travels to Catemaco, we can't wait to get back to La Barra. We have taken a launch from Sonecomapan, but mostly travel via our rental car. I love the drive and we have often seen toucans in the rain forest area. Our favorite restaurant is Estralla's and the owner welcomes us with each return. Our favorite snack is a shrimp cocktail with jumbo prawns served in a large margherita shaped glass filled with cocktail sauce and shredded lettuce plated with orange slices. Delightful on a hot day sipping an ice cold beverage. Freshly caught fish is another favorite. Mostly nationals visit La Barra and we have been treated with exceptional kindness. The Tuxtla mountain range is absolutely beautiful and a river empties into La Barra. This is the only beach in Mexico where I have found sand dollars. The local folks are gracious and pedal their local treats (tamales, etc.) which we always enjoy. You won't be disappointed.

La Reserva ecológica de Nanciyaga es un paraíso natural, de exuberante vegetación con una serie de chozas, "baños" de barro, con fotografías de personas famosas que han pasado por allí y grandes figuras talladas en piedra de la civilización olmeca.
