The Afghanistan Avenue of Honour

The Afghanistan Avenue of Honour is a living memorial dedicated to the memory of all who served in the fight against terror in Afghanistan and to those brave and selfless Australians who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of freedom and liberty.

This is an amazing tribute of the people of Yungburra to our heroes that lost their lives whilst serving our country in Afghanistan. Take time to stand and take in the feeling of this amazing memorial. Then walk along and read the interpretation of why the sculptures, plants and rocks were chosen. On every visit from South Australia we visit the Avenue of Honour.

Lake Eacham Crater Lakes National Park

Reviewed By RonWamberal - Sydney, Australia

A wonderful lake whether sitting by the shores relaxing or plunging in to escape the heat. Well located neat Chambers Lodges, Crater Lakes cottages and Yungaburra, it is so accessible. Great place for a picnic.
I asked a couple of international visitors just getting out of the water how it was, they said a bit cold but refreshing.
It was actually quite warm, a beautiful place to swim and relax.

We stopped here to view the falls and learn a little more about the area. Cool interactive displays and videos. Really helpful staff gave us lots of useful tips, and a particularly detailed map. A suggested detour on our drive back to Cairns even resulted in a hoped-for wild cassowary encounter.

Cathedral Fig Tree

Reviewed By Jeanette M - Cairns, Australia

The Cathedral Fig Tree is right on the Tableland 'tourist circuit' between the Gillies Range Road & Lake Barrine. It's well sign posted, so you'll have no trouble finding the carpark. Once there, there are information boards explaining how strangler figs take over. Just 10 or so years ago you just walked around and had a look. Now they have a boardwalk which makes a visit easy for people with mobility issues or for little kiddies. It's a brilliant stop and free of charge!

From mid-Canada, this kind of foliage is unique! Our children (ages 7&9) were as mesmerizing by this tree as we were! We enjoyed the solitude offered by a mid-week viewing, speculating about how one would climb it if allowed. Curiously enough, we overheard a local talking about how he used to climb the tree as a child! It is an incredible piece of nature, and I encourage you to enjoy the view as a family!

Lake Tinaroo

Reviewed By Boosilhen - Adelaide, Australia

Beautiful location. Good camp sites and excellent and very clean toilet facilities. Hang your own shower in the disabled toilet. we booked for four nights. Unfortunately our time here was spoiled by a group of men who arrived after dark on the third night and proceeded to play Bollywood music and party loudly all night. Raises the question of what to do about excessive noise when camping in a national park.

Yungaburra Markets

Reviewed By SJClotworthy - Cairns, Australia

Quite a large market for the area with lots of local produce, plants and crafts. The food was the highlight for me we fresh made cannoli's and German sausages....yummmmm. Personally I wouldn't make a special trip to the markets if I wasn't on the Tablelands already, but it is a great pit stop if you are out and about for the day in the area. Very busy, a little difficult to find parking, but lots available if you don't mind a bit of a walk.
