One of the highlights of our trip were the Yuanyang riceterraces. Especially sunset and sunrise are wonderful. Photographer's paradise! What we also really liked is that Yuanyang is a wonderful base to explore the surroundings for markets. The local markets are so colourful and authentic, not so easy to find in China nowadays...We booked a tour with a car and guide though as it's impossible to know when the markets are on and they don't happen every day. Do prepare for long drives though and sometimes basic stays out of Yuanyang. We highly recommend this area to go off the beaten track!

It is inevitable that sometimes one cannot choose when one is able to take a vacation, and so we certainly visited these famous rice terraces at the wrong time of the year. We were told that November is the best time to see the terraces in all their glory, but having no choice, we spent four days in the area and appreciated its beauty nonetheless.
Late June/ early July marks the start of the rainy season, so be prepared for sudden, unexpected showers. There are numerous walks, down to the valley floors and the quaint, traditional villages, and up into the Mountains. There is a huge amount of construction going on, buildings and roads, and so a fair amount of heavy traffic at times, but still, a must-see in Yunnan, even in June/July.

Getting here from Kunming is not easy and should be undertaken when the conditions are optimal for the experience to be generally worth the time and trouble. I was there last week and most of the terraced fields had water, which made them quite photogenic.
I've been here before, in January, and they are very pretty then as well, but the weather is cold. This time it was much more pleasant.
If you don't have your own car, you need a local driver to take you around to the various view points. Some are better for sunrise, such as Duoyishu 多衣树, and others are better for sunset, such as Bada 坝达 and Laohuzui 老虎嘴.
When you pay your 100 Yuan admission fee on first entering the area, they will give you a good local map.
Important to realize that Yuanyang 元阳 is not just one single place. It's a region that is somewhat spread out along part of a mountain range. Need to allow a couple nights here so you can adapt to its peacefulness and get the feel of the place.
Also important to know that you might not get perfect viewing weather. Many of these spots are above the clouds and they can obscure the view if the winds are not right. So don't cut it too close. Allow time for driving around.
The terraced fields are not the only attraction. If you come on a weekend, you can attend a Sunday morning market in one of the villages. People come down from the remote hamlets to buy and sell, and it gets quite colorful because of the variety of minority costumes.

Yuanyang terraced rice field featured fantastic, jaw-dropping scenic views! It is pending listing as a UNESCO heritage site, so better visit it before all the tourists start to flood this place. The terraced rice fields are farmed by Hani minority since over 1,000 years ago still using traditional eco-systems and is from about 400 m above sea level all the way until over 1,500 m above sea level !!

I visited Mengpin at sunset and the scenery was every bit as dramatic as I imagined. As we were there in the winter the rice terraces were flooded and they shone silver as the sun set, giving some great almost monochrome photos. Unfortunately, the cloud was a little too heavy that day for the really spectacular colours you see on the postcards, but it was still well worth the trip. There is a good free viewpoint of this area if you don't want to pay 30 RMB to got to the official observation deck - you can save the money for Duoyishu in the morning.

People come from surrounding towns to buy and sell during the Sunday morning market. Makes for a colorful scene. Only lasts until about noon.
The people here are mostly Hani, with some Yi. Bright ethnic clothes and friendly smiles.
I hired a taxi, but there are probably shared vans 面包车 that you can take to get here from Xinjie Town as well.

There is a modest entrance fee to get into this village. It's a real village where some of the Hani people live. I was expecting an artificial commercialized tourist spot with souvenir shops and the like. But there weren't any. There is a token 'museum' which showcases the history of the Hani people and a little snack shop and that's about it. The rest of the village is bona fide.
One thing which might be a bit of a turn-off, was that many (but not all) of the children have been conditioned to ask for money in exchange for having their photographs taken. Some of the adults too. There isn't that much else noteworthy to see or do in the village. No artisan or craftsmen at work for instance. You do get a glimpse into their daily lives though.

This place is also known as "Longshuba". The tours for visitors don't usually cover the trip to there. We hired a small mini-van and the road was muddy and narrow, so it was a really rough ride. I kept on wondering even if we could get there, whether or not we could make it back. The purpose of going there was to see sunset, and the road condition left us feeling we should wait until it was all the way dark in order to head back. Our driver was excellent. He was a Hani grew up in that area. He not only took us there, but walked with us and guided us down.
