This popular resort town is located just a mile from Windermere Lake, the largest lake in Europe and alleged home of more than one peculiar sea creature. If we've scared you out of skiing, boating and fishing in Windermere Lake, there's always horseback riding and golf. Or you can explore the lake from the safety of a ferryboat, which regularly takes passengers from Hawkshead to Bownes.

We had arrived in Windermere for a weekend break to celebrate my Wife’s birthday. The short walk was relaxing and relatively easy walk. We were fortunate with decent weather; the views were quite break taking all around at the top. Well worth it, a must do.

Atmospheric farmhouse full of quirky objects and fascinating stories The Brownes of Townend in the Troutbeck Valley were just an ordinary farming family: but their home and belongings bring to life more than 400 years of extraordinary stories. As you approach Townend - a traditional Lake District stone and slate farmhouse, you'll understand why Beatrix Potter described Troutbeck Valley as her favourite. Once inside, you are welcomed into the farmhouse kitchen with a real fire - burning most afternoons - and a quirky collection of domestic tools. Throughout the house, intricately carved furniture provides a window into the personality of George Browne. The library contains the family’s well-used collection of books, including 45 that are the only remaining copies in the world. Outside, the colourful cottage-style garden is a lovely place to while away some time among the flowers.
This is a unique property, in single ownership for 600 years, giving it an extraordinary unity of design.
Idiosyncratic owners have developed it over centuries, adding often weird, self-aggrandising touches which fascinate.
The room guides are just the best; enthusiastic, knowledgeable and responsive. Outstanding.
You MUST see this house if you have any interest in 17, 18 or 19 century domestic history.

This Victorian Viewing Station is the perfect place on the beautiful west shore, to take in a panoramic view of Windermere. Wander up the Viewing Station as the first tourists to the Lakes did hundreds of year before you. Don't miss the cosy cafe in the courtyard and the striking vistas from the top of the station.
Went in search of a straightforward Walk with the dog in lovely surroundings. Just the ticket! Ample parking although it’s a quiet time now. Open space for ball throwing and wide paths lakeside. Amazing views from the summit.

The Beer Hall is the Hawkshead Brewery tap, but within it are many things: visitors' centre, specialist international beer shop, function room, conference room and The Beer Kitchen providing the perfect food to complement the beer - our "Beer Tapas." The Beer Hall is a showcase for real ale and has a Cask Marque award for serving “the perfect pint”.
Myself and my two sons enjoyed a guided tour at Hawkshead brewery recently. Our host, David, was very knowledgeable about the brewing process and his enthusiasm for his job shone through. After a short video presentation, and an opportunity to taste various types of malted barley, then experience the various flavours of different hops, we were taken through to the brewery to see every stage of the brewing process. Very interesting, and there was even a surprising piece of information about what the brewery do, when the beer is in the fermentation vessels, but you'll have to go on the tour to find out what it is! A great tour which ended with two halves of beer, from their vast selection, in the spacious bar area.

More than ten miles in length, Windermere is England's largest lake that offers a wide variety of summer recreation including cruises, fishing, boating, sailing and scuba diving.
A must if in the area, get yourself on a cruise or hire a boat. The Lake is full on interesting things to see and do. We went on a pleasure cruise, what a super trip.

Enjoy a serene day out at the most enchanting historic houses in the Lake District. When you visit you are invited to relax and immerse yourself in all the beauty and craftsmanship of Blackwell. We encourage you to sit and soak up the atmosphere in Blackwell’s fireplace inglenooks, which have fine examples of tiles by Arts & Crafts designer William de Morgan. The inviting window seats offer stunning views of the surrounding Lake District scenery. You can appreciate the house as it was originally intended, without roped-off areas. Blackwell retains many of its original decorative features, including a rare hessian wall-hanging in the Dining Room, leaf-shaped door handles, curious window catches, spectacular plasterwork, stained glass and carved wooden panelling by Simpsons of Kendal. The rooms contain furniture and objects by many of the leading Arts and Crafts designers and studios.
My wife was particularly interested in the arts aspect and was not disappointed. The contrast between panelled hall and dining room contrasted with the brilliant living room with views over Windermere. You don't need to buy the guide as the display notices are sufficient. Additional...MoreThank you for taking the time to review your visit to Blackwell. We are pleased to read that this extraordinary house lived up to your wife's expectations too! Hopefully we can welcome you both back to Blackwell again soon.

Its only £2.50 to get in, and well worth it.. The "curator", gave us a lovely history lesson on how the school operated way back in time, so interesting... Showed us where Wordsworth sat and etched his name into the desk.. Also contains the headmasters room, and a few museum pieces upstairs, All in all a wonderful little place...Also further up the hill, is the lovely church

Indoor Climbing Venue, suitable for all ages in the heart of The Lake District. Offering Taster sessions, Private Lessons and Kids Clubs throughout the week, and open late for experienced climbers. Our parent company also offer a wide range of outdoor activities; from kayaking and rock climbing, to gorge scrambling and hiking.
We took our two children here for a kids taster session, once we made a telephone reservation.
The facility is fantastic. Both instructors were very good, very knowledgeable, but most of all, very entertaining, very engaging and very good with the children.
There are two indoor walls the fist one is sort of a horizontal wall where one climbs across rather than up and down. In this area the children got a warm up and some basic tuition, before going to the big "up and down" wall. There everybody got about three or four goes climbing. Then lastly there was a bit of warm down and some games back in the horizontal wall area.
This is a friendly, but professionally managed climbing wall. I thoroughly recommend this as a kids activity, rain or shine.
