Finally, we reached the northernmost point of Japan with a sense of satisfaction and happiness. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery despite the blustery icy wind blowing at 45 km/hr, almost blowing us off our feet. Hands were freezing cold and some of our handphone cameras were jammed. None the less, a great experience, never experience before.

We visited this area mainly to see the Noshappu Aquarium, but were attracted by the red and white painted lighthouse which is behind the aquarium. We found Cape Noshappu to be a very quiet area where a few persons were fishing and others sitting and enjoying the view of the sea and surrounding area. It was very easy to reach the cape from town. We asked the cashier at the bus station, and she provided a bus schedule, and indicated which number bus bus stop we should wait at, which was just outside the station, and the number bus to take. It was a 10 minute ride to the cape noshappu bus stop, which is opposite a small shrine om the right, with a red gate.On the left, there is a park, with a clock tower, and on the hills above the green painted weather station equipment and antennas. This bus stop is used by buses from both directions, as an area to turn around.
Once off the bus walk straight ahead, there will be a sign at the road junction which points the direction to the cape and lighthouse. It is a further 10 minute walk to the cape, where there is an aquarium with a children's museum, a restaurant and a few stores. The cape is a good place to relax, but is not as impressive as cape soya which we had visited earlier in the day. The lighthouse makes a great photo op, but is inaccessible. There are regular buses on this route, and all buses return to the main bus and railway station.

Hiking up to the Wakkanai Park was a challenge when the footpath and road was easily covered with minimum 30cm(1foot) snow during the beginning of the snowing season. As one hike up, you can be overwhelmed by the beautiful view of Wakkanai town and the sea at the same time. It could get too cold for comfort when the strong wind blowing from the north.
Overall a nice experience.

I did a lot of traveling in Hokkaido. Decided to fly into Rishiri from Sapporo on the daily ANA 737 service. But this time decided to get the ferry back to Wakkanai for the night. Go first class if you can away from the majority of the tourists. First class was AUD40 one way but well worth it for the 2 or so hours. The seats are comfortable and recline to almost a bed, some have access to power to recharge those devices. You've access to the outside deck to take the final pictures of this magical island as you leave.

A year ago I wrote the review of this place. It wasn't very attractive at that time.
But this time I am so impressed. There has no more free accommodation for camper. Therefore it looks very clean the beautiful.
If you just come for sight seeing, of course it is not worth but if you like to have a nice beautiful building and short walk, it is a good choice.

Once off the bus walk straight ahead, there will be a sign at the road junction which points the direction to the cape and lighthouse. It is a further 10 minute walk to the Aquarium. We paid 500 yen each for entry, and were disappointed that we were too late for the scheduled seal and Penguin show which had just finished. The entrance to the aquarium is up the steps to the right. The tour is done via the upper floor and ends by taking the staircase down to the main tank display on the ground floor. It takes about half an hour to visit the aquarium, It probably would be best to find out if the seal and Penguin show is scheduled on the day of your visit, and plan your visit around this.
I think that younger children (<10) would enjoy the aquarium and there is a small children's science museum next door which may be combined with this visit. We enjoyed our short visit. All buses that pass the aquarium head back towards the main bus station and train station in town, and are at regular 10-15 minute intervals.

Good route to have a stroll if the weather is good. The roads are paved with white sea shells. You'll most likely run into deer and may be fox. Periodical scenery of the hills and sea.
The weather wasn't that great when I went, so i cut the walk short, but would have walked longer if the weather was better.

I decided to take the Penguin Ferry from Korsakov, Russia to Wakkanai, as it seemed the most pleasant option, and I was not disappointed. The customs in Korsakov was very easy and efficient, although it was a very small building. There were no stringent checks on luggage, and I was disappointed not to have purchased items from a store opposite the ferry terminal, as no receipt was provided and I didn't want to take the chance of going through customs without a receipt.
We had bought the tickets online, and had no problems on entry to customs. The ferry trip took a little over two hours, and was very pleasant. There were not many passengers, which made the trip even more comfortable. The ferry was air conditioned, and had movies for entertainment. A few air beds were provided for passengers who may have wanted to rest during the trip.Complimentary water was also provided.
Arrival at the Wakkanai Terminal was efficiently done. The only delay that we had, was the requirement to fill in the necessary customs forms. We received gifts for filling out the questionnaires. The entire process took 15 minutes, and we were able to walk into Wakkanai. The main railway and bus terminal is a 10 minute walk away from the ferry terminal.

A rusty tower commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of Wakkanai. It has a small historical museum and, of course, a souvenir shop. Don't go up the tower elevator unless the sky is clear. Rain looks the same at 200 feet up as it does at ground level.
