The 10 Best Things to Do in Urgup, Turkey

March 26, 2018 Sachiko Swiger

The Cappadocia region's most upscale and contemporary tourist city, Urgup has a number of lovely hotels, many built in and around centuries-old cave dwellings. The city and its surrounding area are known for their mysterious fairy chimneys, early Christian rock churches and fine vineyards. A mix of ancient and modern, Urgup is a center for traditional handmade carpets, but also has a lively nightlife. Hot air ballooning is very popular, and a fantastic way to see the area's beauty from above.

Cappadocia Home Cooking

We renovated and restored our traditional stone arch house to accommodate the Cappadocia Home Cooking School and restaurant, which is located in the small village of Ayvalı, just 10 km. faraway from Ürgüp. Cooking school run by a family, this is why we want you to feel that our home is your home. We want you to enjoy Turkish hospitality and tradition. We also use only natural fruits, vegetables and spices farmed in our own garden. Of course you get to savor of this authentic Turkish food in our restaurant, after we have prepared them together! We are living in a traditional stone arch house of Cappadocia, which we are lovingly restored to accommodate our family runs Home Cooking School. This could be also teaching recipes for lunch and dinner menus. Our home and cooking class is in a small Turkish style village which is located in Cappadocia. Also transport services are available from anywhere in Cappadocia. Small service fee apply.

We always try to take part in cooking classes during our trips and considering that Turkey has such a rich food culture, we could not skip this experience during our stay in Capadoccia. The lovely afternoon we spent with Tolga and his family at Capadoccia Home Cooking was a memorable experience and we couldn't recommend this cooking class highly enough!
During the 3 hours we spend at their home, we learned not only cooking techniques, but also about their local traditions and authentic local cuisine. The menu we helped preparing included stuffed aubergine, lentil soup, Turkish ravioli and an amazing desert called Dolaz with honey, mostly cooked using ingredients from their own garden in the backyard. After the cooking, we sat in the table to enjoy what we had just prepared and also a range of other dishes previsouly prepared by them.
Note: Even though they offer cooking classes, Capadoccia Home Cooking should be classified as a Restaurant, as they serve home-made typical Turkish food also for visitors who don't take part in the cooking classes.

Gomeda Valley

Beautiful, desolate area. During our 3 hours (walking the entire time) in the valley we saw 2 people. There are many cave dwellings along the route and the top part of a he hike is beautiful and interesting. However, the directions we received from the hotel were not adequate and the trail is not well marked, as others have noted. If you go past where you should turn things get progressively more challenging and you will end up a long ways away from Urgup (5 KM to be exact), on top of the 8 KM you do to get out to the road. I understand if you make all the right turns the hike is only 6 KM. It was almost 14 KM by the time we got back - enjoy, but proceed with great caution.

I and my boyfriend booked one hour horse riding tour through our hotel and that was amazing experience. I wasn't expecting too much for only 1h tour but we ended up seeing so much of the beautiful landscape and the best part was that there were no one else than just us and the guide Osman who was very nice and confident with the horses. I would recommend this to anyone who's going to Cappadocia. We did the tour in the middle of the day so I think that's the reason why there were no one else because sunrise/sunset tours are more popular but I really enjoyed our ride. Thank you so much!
