The Bardenas Reales is a arid desert region that was named a Natural Park in 1999 and incorporates 45,000 hectares of landscapes whose vegetation and rock formations are unique in Europe. The most famous landmark is the Castildetierra. It's landscapes were also famously used as backdrops for "Spaghetti Westerns" filmed in the 1950s. In 2000, it was declared a Biosphere reserve by UNESCO.
Few beach-bound tourists ever make it to this part of Spain. You would have to be touring the north, especially the region south of Pamplona. Few would ever imagine a desert, actually a semi-desert, this far north. The total area is 42,00 hectares and is 45 km (28 mi) from north to south and 24 km (15 mi) east-west. The nearest towns are Tudela, to the south, and Olite, to the north. Many of the scenes from War of Thrones were filmed here and I imagine there will be an increase in tourist traffic due to the popularity of the series. The Monastery of Santa Maria de la Oliva is located just to the north of the Bardenas and is an interesting visit.

It is also known as Catedral de Tudela. A museum is linked and many artifacts and other treasures are preserved for viewing.
The art and magnificence of Tudela's buildings are worth a visit. All three Abrahamic faiths were practiced and different cultures co-existed through the Middle Ages. The church was built on the remains of the main mosque, and has become a place of worship for the locals and visitors alike.
The main altar is very impressive. Art works in different styles have been framed within the temple. Chapels and dedications are to be found here. Beautiful stone carving image of the 12th century is attractive. Navarre art stands out exemplary

An important corner of Tudela, where locals socialise in a relaxed mood with friends. It is the access point to the old Jewish quarter. In the 17th century, it was used for bullfights. A clock tower overlooks it. The music from the bandstand livens up the summer evenings. Easter rituals and the summer fiesta occur here.
It is a popular meeting place for Tudelanos, and it is interesting to observe people pass by from one of its café terraces. The kiosk in the midst of the square does attract the attention of the visitors.

We took the (private) buggy tour through the amazing Bardenas Reales on the 13th of July this summer. Our guide Mariusz was very friendly, answered all our questions with humour and had plenty of ice-cold water for us during the tour (an excellent idea when visiting a so-called "desert"). Allthough it was a hot day, it was bearable in the buggy. When we got back to the ecotourism site, we were offered a drink and could make use of the outdoor shower and jacuzzi. Everything was brand new and very clean. Defenitely the best way to visit Bardenas Reales (do not even try to do this alone, you will miss out on too much). Keep up the good work!

We are committed to show you the most incredible side of the Bardenas Reales Natural Park. With our Four-Wheel drive Tours, guided visits and hiking routes, we want to give you all the information you may want to have about this unique place in the world.
Breathtaking would be the right word. While you can try to drive there in a SUV, but the recommended thing is to go on a guided tour, so you not only see the wonderful formations but also the historic and geographic information is of great knowledge enhancement.
We learnt about the area and although the terrain is harsh, with appropriate protection against sun, wind and sand one can manage to put on suitable shoes, sun screen, hat and goggles.
The great reward is the sight of Bardena Blanca! It is indeed unique.

We made a day trip from Pamplona to Tudela and the pilgrimage was inspired by Conde Nast Traveller Review of Navarre. While we had a veg tasting menu for lunch, as we were returning we did not want to miss this recommended Tapas Bar.
And it was a delight. It was very busy but we knew what we wanted so coming to the point we were well served with mouthwatering skewers of veg and seafood. Fresh and crispy croquettes, veggie tempura, tomato salad and stuffed eggs we were really satiated to the back teeth.
Afterwards, the drive to Pamplona was a struggle!!

A steep walk up the hill - and you gain a nice view over the city, the river Ebro and in the direction of las Bardenas reales. Worth the effort.
