Dritvik and Djupalonssandur

Reviewed By Raymond S - Dublin, Ohio

We visited Djupalonssandur early in the morning and had the entire beach to ourselves, an unusual experience for us with all of the tourists that are usually around. Besides enjoying the black, pebbly beach, it was interesting to be able to still see the remains of the Epine scattered on the beach.

Cave Vatnshellir

Follow the path of the lava flow, about 200 meters into the cave and 35 meters below the surface to see amazing colors and lava formations. The 8000 years old cave is located in Snaefellsjokull National Park, about 10 minute drive from Hellnar.

We were treated to an amazing guide who led us into the caves. Gummy was very knowledgeable, both in the cave and in the Icelandic mythology of trolls. He really knew his stuff and made our little tour very enjoyable. The cave is incredible to see and feel, and it helped us in further exploring.

Londrangar Basalt Cliffs

To view these rock pillars look for a small side road marked 'Malarrif'. There is ample parking and a large adventure playground. There are toilets and a small shop with refreshments. It was a beautiful hot sunny day, stunning blue sky and intense blue sea. Pleasant easy walking with views of the ancient lava flows running down Snaefellsjokull.

This was a very modern looking church as opposed to all the other churches we saw in Iceland that all looked very similar. It was a little out of place in the small town.

This church is just off the highway near the village of Rif. You can see it up on the hilltop. The road leading to it creates a great foreground for photos, especially when it is lined with fields of lupine as it was when we were there in early June.

Budir Church

Reviewed By niksk001 - Philadelphia, PA

This small church is an excellent illustration of the tough Icelandic nature. The church, by itself does not look good, but in the context is amazing. We walked around several times both in Dec'16 and Aug'17, and were impressed every time. Weather permitting, consider to go around and close to the ocean (if it is still OK). The church is not fancy nor it has amassing frescoes, but it has a true amazing Iceland spirit (at least the way I unrstood it). It is a hike from Reykjavik, but it is worth it.

Kirkjufell Mountain

The mountain is near Grundarfjordur, a teensy-weensy town in west Iceland. With a summit 1,500 feet above sea level, Mount Kirkjufell the biggest landmark in the village of about 900 residents. Kirkjufell stands on snaefellsnes peninsula of its own, a stunning backdrop for the multicolored Icelandic sky.

Reviewed By TravelcrazyAntwerp - Schoten, Belgium

Kirkjufell mountain and nearby Kirjufell waterfall are one of the most photographed sights in Iceland.
Coming from Grundarsfjördur Kirkjufell mountain is on the righthand side of the Snaefellsnesvegur or road nr 54, and the Kirkjufellfoss waterfall is on the lefthand side of the same road.
There are parking lots but they fill up quickly, and when we visited the sights, several cars were parked on the main road.
The mountain can be photographed from different angles, but the most popular is the one with the waterfall in front.
You have to be patient to get that one, as many groups try to get the same shot; and the weather isn't always cooperating.
Just wait a moment though, and your patience will be rewarded.
There are warning signs for the (mostly Asian) visitors not to come too close to the rim of the falls, as there have been cases of people falling in; and there is no fast rescue team in Iceland to help if that's the case.

Stori Kambur Horse Rental

Reviewed By Maui Coconut - Maui, Hawaii

This is a much delayed review of our trip in mid September. We looked at so many companies offering horseback riding and settled on this one as it seemed the most scenic. Not only did we experience spectacular scenery but fabulously friendly guides and beautiful, well-cared-for horses. Our ride was scheduled near the end of their season so we were lucky that our family ended up with a "private" tour since no other riders were scheduled at the same time. We knew it was going to be a great time because prior to our trip I had emailed the company to let them know that we had an inexperienced rider and asked their opinion on booking during high or low tide. Their responsiveness was a positive sign - so prompt and helpful. Upon our arrival they expertly matched our horse with our experience level and one of the guides gave extra attention to the less experienced rider - who was so comfortable that he even agreed to tolt (gallop) along with the rest of us. In the same way that the guides know all 60+ horses by name, they treat their riders with the same personalized service so we could enjoy the ride in different ways. The water crossing (a little deep in some areas) was amazing as was the scenic Mountains that framed the long stretch of beach. Wow! They also stop so you can take photos of your entire party. (Think about taking off the helmets for the photos - wish we did.) Guides are so patient. Though they were working, it seems like they also enjoyed themselves. After the ride, we hung out a bit with the horses and then went inside to join the guides for some hot beverages and a snack. It was a fitting end to the experience to be sitting around a kitchen table chatting. This is a company that treats you like family...I can't say enough positive things about the experience!!

Skardsvik Beach

Reviewed By CKT808 - Honolulu, Hawaii

Take route 579 from highway 574 at the west end of the Snaefellsnes area to find this beach. It is a shock to see a gold sand beach in a land of black sand Beaches. You will drive to the end of a narrow paved road to the beach through a fairly recently lava flow. The beach is surrounded by tall black cliffs. When we were there, the waves were huge and washing up over the tops of the cliffs. If you continue on the gravel road, you will reach Svortuloft bird cliffs. There is an orange lighthouse with a viewpoint to see the birds. The gravel road is very rough. There is a parking lot at the lighthouse. We parked before we reached the lighthouse and walked the remainder of the way because of the condition of the road.

Londrangar

Reviewed By LibbyH1 - Cincinnati, Ohio

Our driver stopped at one end to let us get out and walk the pathway so we could take a break and experience the beauty of the landscape. The path is a little rough and wet in spots so make certain you have supportive shoes. The wind can really blow as you are along the coast so dress appropriately. The views are stunning. We are so glad we were able to take this hike. It is less than an hour if you are in decent shape. It is mostly flat, but a little tricky as there are stones along the pathway. Just mind your step as you go.
