Santiniketan (Santiniketôn) is a small town near Bolpur in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, India, approximately 180 km north of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). It was established by Maharshi Devendranath Tagore, and later expanded by his son Rabindranath Tagore whose vision became what is now a university town, Visva-Bharati University.

Amar Kutir is the unique and noble initiative, which was started to support the poor, local tribal people with various handloom and handicrafts to give them a sustainable, respectable livelihood.
To date, Amar Kutir has their own sprawling campus with separate facilities for leathercraft, handloom, hand embroidery, handicrafts and now extended to kitchen facilities. All the output, produced and designed in-house, are sold from their store, which is a must-visit for tourists and art lovers alike.
I wish Amar Kutir starts an online store soon so that people from anywhere in the world can have access to their products, without the limitation of having to physically visit their store.

This is the site where Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, father of the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore meditated under the Chatim trees about peace n happiness n hence the name Chatimtala which means under the Chatim trees. The original tree is no more but a similar Chatim tree has been planted in it's place!!

It is a must visit for artists, designers, craftpersons and anybody who does anything remotely creative. It brought back memories of my first year of college when we would be busy working on our projects and exploring new materials. Please understand that this is a functioning arts- design college so care must be taken not to disturb the peace and quiet of the place. The place isn't open till 2PM to outsiders, so plan according. I hope that Kala bhavan students soon create a map of exhibits along with the artists names.

If anyone is very keen for wildlife, they will be disappointed. Only few deer are roaming around. No other animal can be seen. It may cost you 20 rs ticket per person to enter the sanctuary. Otherwise lots of green tress and wide area is there to roam around.

The creator of this museum, Mr Subrata Basu has conceptualized an unique nature museum . He collects unique arts that are self created by nature and has displayed them here in this unique museum . People who enjoys looking at nature , people who looks into cloud and smiles at the various shapes that it creates will be the ones who must visit this place. If you want your children to open their inner eye , this is the place you should take them. Kudos to the courage to set up something like this , so unique and so fulfilling .

Secondary school named by Tagore as Patha Bhavan. Indira Gandhi was one of the students of Patha Bhavan where she studied till 5th std. It is said that she had breached the hostel norms and was rusticated by the Principal in 5th std. Don't know the truth of the saying though. Her room is still in use by hostel residents. It is in front of Gaur prangan, singha sadan and ghanta tola.

Its still amazing that the serenity and the style of study is worshiped same as it began in this modern century...smart class / laptop home work is way behind in this university as open air classes are still the methodology adopted with students in strict dress code.. still a heritage site maintained with essence of nature.
The area is worth a visit if u r a traveler to Kolkatta and want to enjoy the era which we only find in books.
Security has been increased in the area causing a little jittery but was required after the Nobel medallion vanished. ( The replica is now displayed in the Museum )
