Home to the four-day Roskilde Festival, arguably the best European rock festival, hilly Roskilde is less than 20 miles from Copenhagen. If hordes of rock stars aren't pillaging the town of 50,000, the excellent Viking ship museum is Roskilde's prime attraction. Featuring five ships discovered at the bottom of the fjord, you can add to the Viking experience by rowing the fjord on an hour-long longboat trip. The town is also famed for its much adapted 12th-century Roskilde Domkirke Cathedral.

The royal burial church of Denmark and a UNESCO world heritage site. Experience a magnificent church and an architectural masterpiece. 1000 Years of Danish history are gathered here under beautifully decorated vaults and in dark crypts. Here 39 kings and queens of Dnemark lie buried. Roskilde Cathedral is just 20 minutes away by train from Copenhagen central station.
Unfortunately I arrived pretty late and had to rush through the Cathedral. Plan enough time to visit, it's huge. Here are many informative panels (English and Danish) which give you an insight of the cathedral's and Denmark's history. A souvenir guide is included in the entry fee.

Warships await you at the Viking Ship Museum. Don't worry, they won't open fire. This museum is dedicated to education about boat building, archaeology and Viking life. It's a favorite among kids, and visitors of all ages can take to the water in traditional vessels. Open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. seven days a week, until 5 p.m. in summer months.
We took the train from Copenhagen (which was very easy and reasonably priced.) We started with the museum, the short movie was interesting and was shown in several languages. The Viking ships were interesting and the presentation was lovely, right on the shore of the lake. When you cross the bridge to the hands-on experiences, there is plenty to keep the whole family entertained. I recommend booking the Viking boat ride early, as we missed out even though it was not too crowded. The restaurant is good, healthy options for reasonable prices. This could be a full day of entertainment, but we were able to see everything in about 4 hours. We enjoyed our Viking day.

RAGNAROCK, listed on National Geographic 2017 bucketlist of the 15 must-sees museums in the world, is Denmark's national and cultural contemporary museum in Roskilde. With music as the focal museum traces the history of youth culture from the 1950s until now. RAGNAROCK is a vibrant cultural center with an ambitious event program, Concerts, a cafe, a fascinating museum shop and temporary Exhibitions besides the permanent Exhibitions.
The design of the museum is interesting. Many stations to do things like sing, push buttons and stuff. Almost all around there are headphones. The problem is that most headphones only have a lot of talk talk talk and no music. Very educational for the patient visitor. The interactive dance station was great fun. This museum is really not worth it unless you happen to be in the interesting area in general (Musicon has a lot of cultural activities and workshops during the warmer months of the year).

Interesting forest for walks for several hours. Situated by Roskilde Fiord. A few fixed routes. Bus service along the forest. Boserup is a few kilometers from Roskilde city but within walking distance from the harbour via Kællingehaven og Sct. Hans Hospital. You can use Skjoldungestien to get there. In the cold winters you can even cross the fjord to Bognæs, Roskildes other forest, but Bognæs is private (and contains breeding eagles on a "secret spot").

Byparken is a large hill facing the harbor. Here you'll find large trees providing shade or open grass if you prefer the sun.
Enjoy a picnic in the grass, with sea view Og sail sticks down the stream.
There is also a large playground and if you feel for an ice cream, the harbor is just across the park.
It's perfect for visiting with kids!
On Tuesdays during the summer, there is free open air Concerts in the evening.

Roskilde Festival has provided music, mud and mayhem to the people since 1971. Over four days, the festival presents an impressive slew of artists, from established rock gods to exciting newcomers. It is the largest music and culture festival in Northern Europe with eight stages, over 175 artists, 130,000 visitors, and a positive social and environmental attitude to go with it. 32,000 volunteers work tirelessly to transform a field outside of Copenhagen into a mini-city of music which boasts its own supermarket and launderette! The festival is run by a charity that supports children and young people, however, the festival itself has an age-limit of 15.
If you like festivals, music, food and to have fun - this is a must. Just finished my 23rd visit at the festival - and hopefully not the last. There is something for everyone. If you don't want to stay in the crowded camping area there are options nowadays. We went for "Rent a camp" this year which meant that we had 8 tents waiting for us. But it is also possible to stay in Roskilde town or Copenhagen and go there on daily bases by bus or train.

Lützhofts Kobmandsgård is both a museum, but also a little store. More than 1,000 different items are available in the store, and the goods are copies of the original range in 1920. You are welcome to go behind the counter and look into the merchant's office as well as in the back room of grain, feed and grain weight. In the yard the warehouses from the 1700s and 1800s, where you can experience the atmosphere of the days when cobblestones, carriages and free-range chickens which were part of the urban environment.
An example of a living museum store. Here you can buy all the things your preancestors bought. A very charming shop with for instance "KANDIS" (old sugar), french soap, liquorice products from Denmark and Italy, signs + lots of special souvenirs, that you wont be able to buy at regular shops.

Roskilde Museum in the center of Roskilde City, is housed in two of the city's oldest historic houses - "Sukkerhuset" and "Liebes Gard". At the museum you can in a modern and interactive exhibtion experience the dramatic history of the city and the cultural heritage of the region through unique archaeological finds and exciting newer objects. You are also close to the story of one of Denmark's oldest and most important cities - a history of national importance. In addition to the museum's Exhibitions, the museum offers year round an exciting and varied event program for all age groups and interests. At the museum you will also find a museumshop and a cafe
Despite its name being Roskilde Museum, this place is more of a curio shop. It carries unique items that are quite antique and unique in design. I had fun looking. The shelves on the back wall are decorated with old canned and packaged items. The heater is antique and requires coal burning for heating. An interesting place to say the least.

St. Laurentius is full of mystery and stories about Roskilde city center About 2 meters below Staendertorvet you will find the rest of St. Laurentii Church which is famous for well preserved and original brick floor. In the ruins there is a small museum with finds from the archaeological excavation carried out in 1998. You can also visit the church tower with a beautiful view over the city and look into the old and preserved dungeons.
