National Railway Museum Port Adelaide

Explore the history of Australian Railways in this engaging museum. You will encounter numerous displays of various railway artifacts and see steam and diesel trains at work.

Reviewed By David S - Melbourne, Australia

We heard about this place a couple of years ago when touring the Peterborough railway museum. Displays are spread over two large sheds and comprise South Australian and Commonwealth Railways engines and carriages. Lots of other displays including a large model railway and theatrette showing a short film about building the railway across the Nullabor. Sadly could not climb into the many old steam engines there but could wander trough many of the carriages including the historic Tea and Sugar train. Only a short walk from the station or bus stop if travelling on public parking from Adelaide and good size car park.

Thoroughly enjoyed our guided tour with Flick from Truely Tribal. She is so knowledgable and respectful of the environment and our indigenous history and culture. The trip is very reasonably priced and catered well for us vegetarians. I especially liked Flick's lack of wastage with food and supply of fresh fruit rather than junk food. There was ample opportunity for us to get our own treats such as real coffee, pies (SA definitely has the best and in the smallest of towns) and other indulgences if we wanted. The steam train trip was a lot of fun. Arkaroola and Wilpena Pound are even better than imagined.

South Australian Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum sits in South Australia's first heritage precinct. It presents Exhibitions over three floors of an 1850s bond store, the South Neptune Lighthouse and the steam tug Yelta. The Museum is fresh and interactive and makes history relevant to a popular audience.

We bought our tickets with a nice man at the lighthouse and got to climb that first. Amazing view from it.
Then we went over to the museum and the guy at reception was super nice and helpful and explained everything to us.
We then walked around and saw the exhibition of an artist, a real ship, real ship artifacts and also an exhibit about dolphins and whales.
Overall totally worth it and can be done in an hour but will take 2-4 hours if your read everything and also use all the interactive displays.

Kevin is a fabulous tour guide. Really knows his stuff and enjoys sharing his knowledge. So patient with our group of aged mother and 1 wheelchair friend. Took us through the beautiful Adelaide Hills, stopped for shopping in Handorf then off to some wineries and lunch then back through the country side for us country girls. Highly recommended. Thanks Kevin

Really enjoyed this museum. Staff were very insightful and fun. It was interesting remembering how long it took, with numerous touch downs, on the early flights from Australia to the UK and vice versa. Commercial travel was made more interesting by being able to enter some planes and see how small they compare to todays craft. Dinner menu too were very elaborate, especially for 1st class, of course. Lots of military information re the RAAF/RAF etc. Very interesting visit.

A great walking part of Adelaide. Try and visit on the weekend for the market - good fun and lots to look at. We were lucky enough to be there during the Rockabilly festival - lots of vintage cars and vintage clothing on display. The historic buildings and boats create a lovely atmosphere. Easily reached by bus or train from Adelaide.

Fishermans Wharf Market Port Adelaide

The waterfront markets are predominantly 2nd hand bric a brac, books, antiques and collectables. We enjoyed the stroll around and seeing some of the old items was like a trip down memory lane and brought back lots of childhood memories, but lots of the stalls were very similar. The indoor markets are located in a huge shed over 2 levels.

City of Adelaide Clipper Ship

Reviewed By Sharon R - Adelaide, Australia

The ONLY surviving sailing ship that brought original settlers to Australia from the United Kingdom. 250,000 Australians can link their heritage to one of the original passengers.
The history is fascinating and the volunteer guides are informative. A tour of The City of Adelaide clipper ship superbly complements a day trip investigating the history in and around Port Adelaide.
Thanak you to Lionel and his team of volunteers
