This interesting and beautiful modern building by Mecanoo architects houses actually several expositions, both in the building itself and outside in the garden, in several other old buildings. Downstairs a very well made and interesting exposition about the history of the isle Texel (I had forgotten why we have a Tesselschadestraat in Amsterdam) and upstairs a just as well made, but totally different exposition about treasure diving around Texel. By the way, I write this in English, but the museum is all Dutch.

The museum covers part of the site of the former Royal Dutch Naval Dockyards, and includes main building with exhibits, films and artefacts relating to the function of the the dockyard and the associated vessels. There is a former navy submarine to visit, a battleship, minelayer/minesweeper, and the bridge and towers of a more recent naval vessel.
Be prepared to climb steps and go down narrow passageways, especially on the submarine.
Altogether a very good day visit.

Award winning craft brewery with a simple Terrace outside and tables inside. A nice little tour that offers 4 small tasters at the end. Tours are in Dutch and German, but the staff speak English. Friendly, interesting and very nice beers.
We enjoyed the brewery tour although it was conducted in German. Luckily we have been on similar tours so we could figure out what the brewing process was. The beer tasting at the end was great. The outside eating area was nice and we ordered some appetizers to eat with the beer we drank. Too bad they don't export their beer. We couldn't even find it in Den Haag. Fortunately we bought some at the brewery.

This two hour trip is great fun, the crew shows a tremendous amount of humour while explaining what they do and what you see around you. At the same time you get a lot of information about the local sea life and the surroundings. Children (and adults if you like) get to hold crabs, fish, shrimps and other sea animals. Also the tasting of the freshly prepared shrimps is a feast!

This museum is very hard to find. It is in the naval yard on the opposite end from the Maritime Museum but the signage is terrible. It is a beautiful and well organized museum with wonderful docents who are very helpful. There is a free audio tour but items on it are limited. We had a very enjoyable visit.

Without proper instructions we didn't find... The lady on the phone didn't speak English and there was no address on the Internet. We got to the harbor and had to spend a long time searching for the boat but didn't find. Disappointing!!!

We called 5 times to book this trip. Every time the boat owner told us to call back later because he wasn't sure there wasn't going to be too much wind... "Call back tomorrow.... I'm not sure, maybe in 3 days... maybe Friday..."
We stayed a week at Texel, but that entire week this boat didn't left the harbor once. At the end we took the large boat, which did go out several times a day. We talked to other people, who told us the exact same thing: while there are fliers advertising this trip everywhere, the "captain" doesn't sound too keen about working.

Unfortunately we didn't spot any seals, even though this was the goal of the boat trip. One person on board, with a rather expensive zoom lens managed to spot some seals.... Now I know... I'll first save up for an expensive camera before buying the tickets for the boat :-)
However, the trip was interesting enough without spotting the seals. We visited the military harbor of Den Helder and got very interesting information about the various ships there. The captain spoke Dutch and German only. There is a folder available with information in English, however the spelling/grammar is beyond comprehension. It is probably literally translated from Dutch because it simply is written in double Dutch.
My teenage son was allowed in the cabin and steer the wheel. He enjoyed that very much. On board there are drinks served, as well as kibbelings (pieces of white fish with dough, fried) and other snacks.
2 hours is long enough. Would have loved seeing the seals...

From the small harbour Oudeschild on Texel, we did a trip with this company that included watching seals and visiting the socalled "Wadden" (parts of lands in the water that are temporarely above the sea level). Before we started it was bad weather with thunder, lightning and heavy rainfall. But the captain said "soon it will be much better". And indeed, shortly after we had departed, the sun started so shine. Visiting the "Wadden" was a great experience, also due to the wonderful clouds and the reflections, very impressive. At those moments you feel tiny in nature, especially when the bad weather started again but it drove away from us. On the way back, we noticed a small groups of seals, not far away from our boat, how exciting! The captain and crew were very nice and helpful, don't miss it!
